These placements provide a “taster†experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. Candidates will have the opportunity to see television, radio and online production at first hand. Candidates will have the chance to spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it, along with the staff that provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission.
We're looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest either in Radio, Television or Online programme making and broadcasting.
Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Wales and its local output.
Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable. The successful candidate should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.

Radio Wales, Cardiff – (July only - over 18)
Radio Wales is offering the opportunity to gain experience in the running of a daily programme production team, You will learn the day to day requirements of a live production team.

News Ingest and Editing, Cardiff, (over 18 – May, June or July only)
The candidate will gain practical experience shadowing the News Picture editors in the Edit Hub and the News Media Managers based in the Newsroom. This will be across TV (Welsh and English language) and Digital output. The placement may also provide the opportunity to shadow a News Camera Crew.
The ideal candidate will have an awareness and interest in News Production on TV and Digital platforms. They must be prepared that the hours will be broadcast hours (not 9-5) as this will allow for them to make the most of their placement.
Welsh language skills are not necessary
News Operations, Cardiff (June only – over 18)
You will gain practical experience in the newsroom at Central Square in Cardiff, BBC Wales’ brand new state of the art building. You’ll be learning alongside Multi Skilled Operators in automated galleries and studios . Your time may include shadowing a news crew and reporter, ingesting and co-ordinating media in intake, news picture editing for various outlets, experience in our news graphics department and spending time in the news studios and galleries. Applicants need to appreciate that news is not 9 to 5 and must be prepared that any day may end later than planned and hours throughout the week may vary on a day by day basis.
Welsh language skills are not necessary
Journalism English Language Placements, Cardiff or Bangor (June only – over 18)
You will gain practical experience with our team of journalists at Central Square in Cardiff, BBC Wales’ brand new state of the art building, or in our newsroom in Bangor. You will be learning alongside journalists in our TV, radio and digital teams, shadowing shifts in the newsroom. You may also shadow reporters as they put together stories out in the field. Applicants need to appreciate that news is not 9 to 5 and be prepared that any day may end later than planned and hours throughout the week may vary on a day by day basis.

Journalism Welsh Language Placement, Cardiff or Bangor (June only – over 18)
You will gain practical experience with our team of journalists at Central Square in Cardiff, BBC Wales’ brand new state of the art building, or in our newsroom in Bangor. You will be learning alongside journalists in our TV, radio and digital teams, shadowing shifts in the newsroom. You may also shadow reporters as they put together stories out in the field. Applicants need to appreciate that news is not 9 to 5 and be prepared that any day may end later than planned and hours throughout the week may vary on a day by day basis. You will need to be fluent in Welsh to apply for this placement.
We can offer placements of up to one week in the BBC’s Bangor newsroom. Candidates would gain experience with our news production teams and reporters. A keen interest in news and current affairs is essential for these roles, in addition to the ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
Radio Cymru, Cardiff (over 18 only and who are fluent Welsh speakers)
Radio Cymru’s output (Bangor and Cardiff) is multi-platform. You will observe and learn how to prepare both live and built programmes. There will be opportunities to observe and prepare both video and written material for our social media and online output. You might be interested in music, features, journalism, drama or comedy, the department’s output is varied and exciting. Placements last a week.

Wales Sport - Cardiff (over 18)
BBC Sport Wales is the hub of Welsh Sport; covering rugby, football, cricket, darts, snooker, athletics and much more. A work experience placement with us will involve meeting and watching the teams for our TV, radio and digital content on strands like Scrum V, Clwb Rygbi, Elis James Feast of Football Podcast, Radio Wales Sport & Chwaraeon Radio Cymru. If you’re passionate about sport and want to get a taster of how our sports content is made, this is the placement for you.
