Job Description

Are you a talented engineer with design chops or a strong understanding of UI/UX and a passion for high-fidelity interactions? This role works in a people-centric and culture-first collaborative environment alongside UI/UX designers, product designers, engineers, strategists, and writers to design and implement best-in-class modern experiences for the world tomorrow supported by thoughtful and intentional technology tomorrow.

We’re a forward-looking team passionate about building innovative technology, implementing delightful designs, saving designers and engineers time through design tooling, prototyping, and automation, as well as working on building the future vision of the next generation of Microsoft products. Our team consists of folks with diverse backgrounds in engineering, design, the sciences, law, and medicine; we come in all shapes and sizes. We love innovating and pushing the boundaries of technology and being a critical part of the Microsoft Design system, which touches many of the popular and well-loved Microsoft products (Teams, Office, Azure, Xbox, and so on).

If you’re looking for a change and wanting to make an impact – we invite you to join us in our mission and vision to build the future of UX for Microsoft.

About you

You’re a self-driven, talented UX Engineer, design engineer, or developer with design chops who’s passionate about how design comes to life - a thoughtful and inclusive collaborator who is able to bring folks along the journey in striving for product excellence, and a nimble developer with keen design sensibilities. You have experience interpreting designs into fully functional interactive experiences, and quickly learning new tools and technologies, and aren’t afraid to dive into the unknown. Best of all, you understand and appreciate the design process and know how to merge that knowledge with established development processes.

You’ll nurture and evolve our culture. You’ll design in the open to move fast and build experiences without seams. You’ll share, jam, and contribute to other’s work to make it better. You’ll make to think, prototype to test.

Don’t feel like you need to fit into a predefined box matching the role you’re applying for—you never know where the true opportunity may go after we meet you. We’ll provide you with unparalleled levels of opportunity and resources, with the goal of creating experiences that influence the industry, as well as people’s lives.

A day in the life

Develop polished components and experiences

Make designs real through prototypes and code, and iterate on these designs to make them really shine

Offer constructive feedback followed by creative and effective solutions

Communicate to stakeholders when technology constraints require design or engineering compromises

Follow best practices and provide code review feedback to your peers

Participate in collaboration with designers and product managers to create prototypes that convey experience intentions when static comps can’t tell the whole story

Communicate clearly and concisely with stakeholders

Responsibilities

Other success factors in our dynamic environment:

Thoughtfulness—You’re thoughtful and deliberate in your choices and able to articulate that on the fly across a cross-functional team, and occasionally, conflicting priorities and objectives.

Bigger picture – Understands how to prevent short-term work from blocking long-term goals.  Need to be able to move very fast without coding/designing in a way that inhibits our future needs or others’ efforts.

Business intelligence + persuasion skills—You’ve got the social intelligence and business saavy to understand (or explain) what needs to be changed, prioritized, and why. You use criticism to spur insightful conversations instead of be defensive or shut down.

A translator of tradeoffs—There’s no perfect design or implementation, and no right answer. You’re able to create different options and translate the tradeoffs between them in the context of business impact.

A facilitator—You know how to collaborate with others and let them put their concerns on the table.

Self-awareness – You pay attention to how you impact team health and culture, as well as your personal well-being. We value folks who care about others, and who make sure to take time for themselves and for self-care.

Qualifications

Minimum of 5-7 years UX development skills, or a strong emphasis on design in UI/UX design, web design, or a related field, OR significant industry experience uniquely qualifying you for this role

Mastery of core front-end technologies, including modern JS frameworks (such as Typescript, React, or Next.js), HTML, and SCSS/CSS.

Strong attention to detail, with the ability to match redlines and design specs

Ability to work effectively cross functionally with other teams (Design, Research, Engineering, PM)

GitHub, CodePen, or other links showcasing coding skills OR portfolio is required

Desirable skills & experience:

Passion for invention, human-computer interaction, and seamless user experiences

Strong interest and understanding in regards to enabling User Research through prototyping.

Strong understanding of production requirements and the willingness to steer work to minimize negative impact

Confident presenting and promoting design solutions

The ability to wear many hats and contribute across disciplines

A history of bringing delightful interactive experiences to life via motion

Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of designers and developers

Self-motivated and comfortable with the ambiguities inherent in incubation work

Strong brainstorming skills, from participation to leadership

A strong interest in design, technology, and trends, with an eye toward the future

Knowledge of building design tools (i.e. in Figma) is a bonus, but not required
