About this role
The Safety team is responsible for setting the safety strategy for Openreach, ensuring policies and process are in place and for providing second line assurance to senior management. The team is also responsible for event management involving Openreach assets, supplier management and innovation. Ensuring Openreach is able to demonstrate management of its assets in such a manner which is legally compliant and ethical.
Reporting to the Senior Manager Plant Safety, the post holder will lead and direct their team to deliver the research, conduct the analysis and provide the insight which underpins/amends the safety policies on which the safe management of that network is built. The post holder will also lead the implementation of identified changes helping gain business support to do that.
You'll have the following responsibilities
- Responsible for supporting the manager & the wider team to implement and project manage identified changes, including leading changes of low-medium complexity, securing business support to do that.
- Responsible for supporting identification of current and emerging risks posed by the Openreach underground network and creation of policies to safely manage those risks.
- Accountable for investigating potential current and future opportunities for the better management of risk and cost reduction.
- Supporting the team in the auditing of suppliers of underground assets, joint boxes and frames and covers to ensure the quality of the process and product
- Responsible for advising on underground asset management and practices ensuring that all 4m joint boxes and 250k manholes are installed/maintained in a way to minimise risk to the public.
- Responsible for monitoring full root cause analysis and completion of learning during any incident investigations (e.g. Frame/Cover collapse) to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
- Provide on-site support and safety expertise during the testing/trialling of new/existing products/methods.
- Responsible for the resolution of high level complaints on behalf of the MD.
- Will lead a small team of underground plant specialists, and be responsible for setting clear objectives that align to the wider safety strategy of everyone home safe and well.
You'll have the following skills & experience
- Ability to develop strong relationships with multiple stakeholders. Engage with key stakeholders at all levels internally and externally to understand their issues and perspective.
- Proactive horizon scanning, using both data analysis and practical hands on in the field practice to spot issues and opportunities rather than waiting for them to manifest.
- Pragmatic ability to balance the theoretical risks with practicality
- Make a difference - finding innovative ways to bring about change, particularly cultural change.
- Ability to manage incidents of low-medium impact within the Plant Safety team, and ensure full root cause analysis and learning is achieved to reduce the risk of similar accidents.
- Willingness to mix both the data & office analysis with the external element being a key part of this role. Compiling results and data; up to and including destructive removal of sub standard installations.
- Able to work alone or part of a team and virtual team engaging to ensure projects are completed to SLA.
- Able to own projects from cradle to grave and engage key stakeholders across the Openreach business units.
- A strong understanding of the Underground network and all associated installation and maintenance activities.
- Minimum of NEBOSH certificate in Health & Safety or equivalent
