Key Responsibilities:

The Technology Manager will:

  • Work closely with Business Development and Programme Chief Engineers to gather Voice of the Customer inputs into future Technology & Product strategy roadmaps. This will focus primarily on existing military ‘complex weapon’ field of expertise but includes focus on our expanding commercial markets, e.g., commercial aircraft, drones, land vehicles and other technologies, such as wireless aircraft systems, optical aiding.

  • Provide support to Business Development and the Programme Chief Engineers in attending meetings with new and existing customers.

  • Be responsible for driving the Technology Team to delivery our new technology in Sensors and Inertial Measurement Units. These products combine in-house MEMS sensors, FPGA’s, embedded software and unique architectures housed within bespoke mechanical fixtures that endure extreme environmental conditions.

  • Develop new ways of working with customers to streamline the selection and integration of Inertial Systems products into their new or existing systems.

  • Actively participate in industry committees and forums to facilitate alignment of product strategies and customer needs and to increase the visibility of the company within the industry

  • Develop effective relationships with key technology sources and partners such as universities, other industry partners and the SPP/SSSL Joint Venture.

  • Pursue external funding opportunities independently or in conjunction with customers for the advancement of technologies.

  • Manage the Technology Development team & provide the Technology Point of Contact into the business unit and the wider Collins Aerospace business.

  • Drive the overall technical execution of the projects in the technology portfolio. Ensuring that the project scope is understood and identifies overall budgetary needs for successful project execution.

  • Ensure the development and management of technical risks and develop and executes mitigation plans.

  • Responsible for the continuous improvement of the ‘Develop Technology’ process that underpins our Business Management System (BMS).

  • Supports product line strategy development and lead technology road mapping events.

  • Increase participation in developing invention disclosures and manage the patent process, including tracking and reporting of the patent portfolio.

General Line Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership to the Technology Development team and support to the wider engineering team.

  • Develop the functions capacity to meet current and future project demands of the business for the team

  • Allocate of team individuals to development projects in conjunction with the Development Programme Manager

  • Manage the team member’s activities to ensure that projects are delivered to schedule, cost and quality

  • Develop overall project milestones and master schedules for technology portfolio.

  • Identify and address recruitment needs and recruit as appropriate to achieve capacity & skill requirements

  • Develop individuals to enable career opportunities and deliver future needs including:

o Skills and training

o Training & development plans

o Performance Connections

o Pulse Survey action plans

o Timesheet management (booked hours / holiday management)


Key Attributes and Experience:

  • Strong systems engineering background with deep technical knowledge in inertial systems preferred

  • Strong customer and internal stakeholder relationships

  • Good communication skills and ability to work across the organisation and various disciplines

  • Project management and performance measurement and tracking methods and tools

  • Ability to prepare and deliver key programme metrics and internal/external presentations

  • Management of the team members including performance reviews and development plans

  • Experience running multiple complex projects that include teams from multiple locations and countries

Qualifications and Key Skills:

  • Degree qualified engineer (higher degree preferred)

  • Chartered Engineer status preferred

  • Member of a recognised professional institution

  • Proven experience of managing technology, research and development teams

  • Demonstrated experience, skills and knowledge in inertial systems and MEMS sensor technology
