About this role

• IP Network design leadership for core voice networks or customer solutions across Voice. Hold accountability for technical decision making, effectively assessing and introducing new technology as part of the planning portfolio from proof of concept to delivery

• Provide design authority for significant IP network component(s) of the overall solution and/or platform. 

• This will include scoping the designs, and producing standardised designs in a range of areas including core and customer specific network design.                                                                                                              

• Responsible for production of high and low level design documentation as appropriate including initial settings - prior to test entry quality gate as defined in delivery plan

• Set up network models for design testing as appropriate                                                                           

• Manage co-ordination with all Customer, Platform design, Test, OSS, Security and Operational team stakeholders

• Point of contact for technical expertise to project senior stakeholders, internal and external.

• Manage the technical interface to the supplier, ensuring that all developments are delivered to the expected scope, cost and quality., and any issues are resolved to our satisfaction

• Driving efficiency and scalability through the re-use of network designs across the overall network platform and/or customer solution.  

• Ensure that designs are progressed in line with Delivery plan, and any issues are flagged to the Delivery manager. Support resolution of any issues to keep delivery on track.

• Managing peer reviews and providing sign off authority on designs associated with network components within network platforms and/or customer solutions

• Highlight any design risks encountered. Manage resolution of risks.

• Mentor and share knowledge with others, offer expert advice and recommendations in your areas of subject expertise, and be an advanced user of design tools.  

• Provide technical expertise to inform contract and commercial management.  Provide input to business cases and proposals for ways to avoid costs

You'll have the following responsibilities

People

• Lead a small matrix team as appropriate across Design and Test to ensure they are trained and directed to design and test IP network related deliveries appropriately

Cost

• Driving efficiency and cost reduction through defining Brilliant and Simple requirements to the supplier and other BT systems

Quality

• Ensuring rigorous and highly available solutions to underpin the highly available requirements of SDIN and our VoIP services. 

Delivery

• Design and drive improved working processes, Operating outside of set designs and guidelines where necessary to find innovate solutions to optimise delivery of technical solution.

• Application of Design best practise to domain, and interlock with design and delivery plans across all related systems and teams. 

You'll have the following skills & experience

The Voice IP Specialist Network Designer will possess a thorough knowledge of the IP network technologies, voice networks that are used to deliver our strategic voice services. They will also have a good understanding of associated standards and industry initiatives that relate to the existing services and their evolution. Other specifics for the role include thorough knowledge of

• Juniper and Cisco core network technology

• Switching and Routing design

• Hybrid Cloud network technology (Azure expressroute, AWS Direct Connect)

• Stakeholder and Vendor  Management – Ability to engage with Stakeholders and Vendors at an appropriate level to ensure necessary business results can be attained.

• Problem solving – Proven ability to solve complex problems in a controlled and systematic manner, analysing the available data to make the correct business decesions taking responsible risks when appropriate.

• Coaching and Mentoring – Experience of coaching and mentoring others for peak performance

• Process improvement / Management – Works across teams to identify changes to processes and procedures to enable faster delivery or better business outcomes.

• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to bring teams together across BT to look at business issues ranging from feasibility through to issues affecting live service.

• Desirable: Network Engineering Gold ALP and membership of a relevant professional organisation.

• 3 years + experience of complex core voice IP network design - MANDATORY

• Thorough knowledge of Juniper, Cisco core network platforms – MANDATORY

• Thorough knowledge of switching and routing concepts - MANDATORY

• Test domain expert with broad experience of test design for IP networks - MANDATORY

• Excellent Coaching Skills – MANDATORY

• Proven record of delivering  projects to time, cost, quality requirements – MANDATORY

• Excellent communication skils both verbal and written - MANDATORY
