About the opportunity

The Faculty of Science is one of six faculties operating within the University and includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology, the Sydney School of Veterinary Science and the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science. The School of Chemistry is now seeking a Technical Officer to support the Chemistry Teaching and research laboratories and contribute towards the smooth operation of these laboratories. This role will also provide operation support to the wider school technical operations team.

Your key responsibilities (but not limited to) will be to:

provide WHS and operational support as part of school technical operations team

ensure laboratories is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements including chemical inventory support and assisting with ensuring safe handling and storage of chemicals

assist with projects as required.

provide laboratory support and assistance to coursework students, researchers and others working in the laboratories.

About you

completed a degree in Chemistry or has equivalent combination of relevant experience and or/education to work in a chemical laboratory, with a willingness to undertake further training and/or studies to better develop their skills in laboratory techniques/methods

experienced in the operation and maintenance of a suite of laboratory equipment including spectrophotometers, FTIR, gas chromatography mass spectrometry and other specialised instrumentation found in Chemistry Laboratories

possess good verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet the key accountabilities.

can work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.

possess strong attention to detail and awareness of issues related to dealing with commercially sensitive or confidential information

strong planning, problem solving skills and organisational skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position
