Our Libraries and Community Spaces Team support a truly democratic society by creating opportunities for lifelong individual and community development, wellbeing, and engagement through a wide range of resources, expertise, services, programmes and social connection opportunities. We provide essential and innovative 21st century services for communities and organisations across the City. We are an ever-changing, buzzing hive of activity that provide far more than books.

We have four Team Member Customer Service roles available with the Wellington City Libraries and Community Spaces in the North Cluster, working at the two libraries, Johnsonville (Waitohi) and Mervyn Kemp (Tawa). These are exciting opportunities to work in vibrant and dynamic people-oriented spaces. The Johnsonville Library is the largest of the branch libraries on two levels within the Waitohi Community Hub. The Mervyn Kemp library is a medium sized library, catering mainly for the Tawa community.  Our customer base is widespread throughout the Northern Suburbs, as well as from other parts of Wellington. Our vision is to be open for creativity, connectivity and innovation. Our mission is to connect our communities to knowledge, wonder and possibilities through the network of libraries and community spaces.

Te Wero | The Challenge

The role is action-packed every day at the very forefront helping our communities to connect with knowledge, ideas, possibilities, and each other. It is a front -facing customer service role and you will be part of the team that supports and enables the lifelong-learning journey of our community members. The major focus of this role is the provision of lending services and promotion of online resources. You’ll proactively help customers use a broad range of digital and physical services and collections, for their information and exhilaration. Activities and tasks will include: all aspects of membership, promoting library services and events, processing payments, circulation, assisting customers to issue items, collection maintenance, directing customers to the right place or information, and solving problems. Maintaining the collection and spaces within the building by ensuring items are shelved correctly, updating the collections and setting up displays. It may also include planning and delivery of some programmes or activities in the future for groups of varying ages. You will be working alongside a creative team of library staff who are passionate about customer service and the communities we serve.

be digitally savvy and comfortable assisting others in accessing technology and online services; enthusiastic about innovation and problem solving who seeks continuous improvement;

have strong customer service experience and an interest in working with children, youth and families. You’ll enjoy working as part of a team and working well with people of all ages.

An ability to speak te reo Māori at a confident level, together with knowledge of tikanga and kaupapa Māori will be an advantage. We will provide opportunities for you to learn on the job, and through formal training opportunities, in a supportive environment.

Work pattern and locations

Role 1: Permanent part time 21 hours per week at the Johnsonville Library in the Waitohi Hub. Work pattern – Saturday (9.15-4.15pm), Sunday (9.15-4.15pm), Monday (9-5.30pm)

Role 2: Permanent part time 33 hours per week at the Johnsonville Library. Work pattern – Tuesday (10.45-6.30pm), Wednesday (10.30-7pm), Thursday (1.45-7.15pm), Friday (9-5.30pm), Saturday (9.30-4pm)

Role 3: Permanent part time 28 hours per week. Work pattern – Monday (10.45-7.15pm) & Saturday (9.15-4pm) @ Johnsonville Library; Thursday (9-5.30pm) & Friday (9-3.15pm) @ Tawa Library.

Role 4: Fixed term part time 26 hours per week (fixed term through to 30 June 2022). Work pattern -Monday (10.45-7.15pm), Thursday (10.45-5pm) & Saturday (10-4pm) @ Johnsonville Library; Friday (10-6.15pm) @ Tawa Library

Role 5: Fixed term part time 24 hours per week (fixed term through 30 June 2022) across all the library sites in the Wellington City Libraries and Community Spaces network. Work pattern – Thursday (9:30-6pm), Friday (9:30-6pm), Saturday (9:45-4:15pm).

The full-time annual salary for all the roles are between $50,544 to $59,925 per annum depending on skills and experience and will be pro-rated for part time and fixed term roles. Our Vaccination Policy covers this role, which means COVID-19 vaccinations are mandatory.

If successful, it will be a requirement of your employment that you are fully vaccinated by 11 February 2022, and that you provide your personal vaccine pass as an official record of your COVID-19 vaccination status. 

It will also be a requirement to maintain your COVID-19 vaccination status, which could include additional booster vaccinations based on government advice.
