Boeing Defence UK (BDUK) is a subsidiary of the Boeing Company and currently employs over 1,200 people in the UK. We are responsible for delivering several exciting contracts to our UK Defence customers including new capabilities like the E-7 AEW&C and the P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft, C4ISR Services, Support for the Chinook & Apache Fleets, Logistic Information Services and Training Services and are very much in a growth phase.

The Role

This role is for a Senior Manager to lead the SEIT (Systems Engineering, Integration and Test) Engineering department for BDUK. The SEIT Department Lead is accountable for delivery of all Systems Engineering work scope and associated activities across BDUK, including management responsibility to a group of first line managers and 50+ individual contributors. The successful candidate will become a member of the Engineering Function Leadership Team, reporting directly to the BDUK Engineering Director, and will be expected to further develop the interfaces with the other departments to enable efficient and effective working practices as the Function experiences a period of rapid expansion in the next 2 years and beyond. This role will require you to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in both Engineering and other disciplines and with our colleagues across the world to enable your teams to be able to deliver their work to cost, quality and schedule and to support the growth of the Engineering Function.

Key aspects of the role include (but are not limited to):             

  • Further evolution of the requirements and definition of the SEIT Department in the context of the Engineering Function and the evolving BDUK organisation, including development of an appropriate culture aligned to the Enterprise values
  • Yearly forecasting of the departmental budget and management and review of financial performance
  • Management of department, function and programme Risk, Issues and Opportunities
  • Implementation and leadership of Continuous Improvement activities utilizing the Boeing World Class Productivity and Quality (WCPQ) approach to achieve Engineering Excellence
  • Development and execution of a SEIT operational strategy and roll out of SE initiatives, aligned to the Function and Business Unit strategies
  • Accountable for the execution and delivery of SEIT work scope into programmes and for business growth
  • Management of resource demand and supply, including recruitment of new staff when required
  • Reporting of performance into Functional management meetings
  • Oversight of people management, including performance enablement and talent management tasking
  • Networking activities with the wider Boeing Enterprise
  • Being responsible for the development and roll out of Systems Engineering training across the business

Aside from your technical work, you will also have the opportunity, if you would like, to support company initiatives for example, quality improvements, promoting a safety culture, promoting Diversity and Inclusion, mentoring and coaching, STEM outreach and a number of focus projects to support the growth of the company including its employees.

What We Are Looking For (Preferred)

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years Systems Engineering experience, with additional experience as a manager of a team or department. In addition, you will have, or are looking to develop, the following skills:

  • Considered to be a Subject Matter Expert on the application of Systems Engineering in the Defence context
  • Experience of leadership of large teams of people, including implementation of culture, continuous improvement, performance enablement and talent development
  • Experience of development and implementation of operational strategy
  • Ability to develop networks across global organisations and to understand and influence stakeholders to achieve the desired outcome
  • Strong reporting and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of finance and budgetary management
  • Strong time and task management skills with an ability to deal with numerous unexpected pop up tasks on a regular basis

Qualifications (Required)

A Degree level (or equivalent) qualification in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or an Engineering related field is required with experience in developing, delivering and/or managing systems/services.

Work Authorisation: This requisition is for a locally hired position in the UK. Candidates must have current legal authorisation to work immediately in the United Kingdom. Boeing will not attempt to obtain Immigration and labour sponsorship for any applicants. Benefits and pay are determined at the local level and are not part of Boeing U.S. based payroll

Security Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain a UK security clearance for which the Government requires UK Citizenship

Relocation: This position does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense
