Technology Operations is part of the BBC’s Technology Group. The department actively helps BBC programme makers create and deliver great content across radio, TV and online. Technology Operations is principally responsible for supporting live and recorded programme output all day, every day across News Group, Radio, BBC England and BBC North in Salford. As a support department our role is to make life as easy as possible for those using the BBC’s technology, while minimising the amount of Licence Fee we consume in doing so.
The Broadcast Support Centre team is part of the Engineering Support group within Technology Operations. The purpose of the team is to provide Specialist technical services and is therefore the interface between the Support teams, Project delivery teams and Technology Suppliers.
The Tech Ops Broadcast Production Systems team supports the Broadcast Support Centre with 2nd and 3rd Line services and expertise along with maintaining Test and Staging systems on behalf of BBC England. This team also designs and delivers the monitoring, platforms, automation and release management functions for the BBC England estate
ViLoR (Virtualisation of Local Radio) was a major project initiative to deliver Local Radio services in BBC England in a cloud based way utilising datacentre technology and IP audio distribution to revolutionise the way we work. All 39 Local Radio Sites have now been converted to ViLoR .
IGS (Integrated Gallery Systems) Is a major project initiative to deliver gallery systems refresh to regional television sites in BBC England, which is an enabler for HD Edit and playout for BBC England.
We are presently looking for someone to fill roles within the Broadcast Production Systems team. The work involves supporting and maintaining the BBC England estate and involves direct contact with regional engineers on a regular basis – devising ways to upgrade and support systems, to solve problems and reacting quickly to restore services. There are often periods where you will be unsupervised and responsible for your own decision making.
The role is advertised as Career Path Framework “Systems Engineer†but we will utilise this role as we see fit as skills develop. We have several Graduates of the flagship BBC Apprentice and Trainee schemes already working in the Birmingham Team.
Thus we will consider appointing trainee engineers and newly qualified apprentices into roles where appropriate, and give training where necessary in the Broadcast Support Centre.
Systems Engineer (Full time continuing) - Shift Based (dayside working is expected but there may be some out of hours and weekends required) in the Tech Ops Broadcast Production Systems Team in Birmingham – The primary role is providing 2nd and 3rd line support to the Broadcast Support Centre Team and the Principal Systems Specialists covering a wide range of technologies and systems. The team operate in an Agile framework and deliver work in Sprints. You may be called upon to assist or lead on resolving on-air and service affecting issues and ensuring that this information is entered into the Service Management Tool and Knowledge Management systems in Technology Operations. You will be responsible for ensuring that support issues are dealt with promptly and efficiently and with a high degree of accuracy across a wide range of technology.
You will have experience in working with supporting systems issues and managing problems. You will also have experience of working on broadcast/IT systems in a live TV/Radio or multi-media environment, IT automation systems and have an understanding of the connectivity and network systems required to provide a successful service. You will need an eye for the detail of systems configurations and a proactive approach to detecting and correcting errors in systems, documentation or processes. A high level of customer service is expected and you may be dealing with live on-air issues on a regular basis.
A background and understanding on Broadcast applications and techniques alongside a practical knowledge of Service Design and Transition and of remotely supporting users and monitoring systems remotely are required for this role.
