Job Information

The Safety and Environmental Engineer’s role is to lead the safety and environmental activities to be undertaken by RUK, or sub-contractors, during the design, manufacture and installation of the system such that it meets the safety and environmental requirements and complies with Defence Standard 00-056 and Defence Standard 00-051.

Responsibilities will include:

• Preparation and maintenance of the Safety and Environmental Management Plan.
• Supporting Hazard Identification and Hazard Analyses.
• Supporting Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping.
• Developing Hazard Logs and Environmental Features Matrices.
• Preparation and maintenance of Safety and Environmental Cases.
• Developing artefacts to support the Safety and Environmental Case.
• Provision of safety and environmental input to project and design reviews.
• Provision of safety and environmental assurance, including auditing.
• Management of safety and environmental activities undertaken by other organisations.
• Provision of support to bid and proposal activities, including generation of estimates for safety and environmental aspects of the programme.

Education and Experience Summary

Essential

• Degree in Engineering, Physics, Computing or other relevant subject.
• 5 years experience in an engineering discipline.
• Experience of working to Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00‑051 and Product Safety legislation.

Desirable

• Experience of developing integrated training solutions and subsequent installation at customer sites.
• Chartered engineer.

Demonstrable Experience and Knowledge

• Track record in producing safety and environmental cases acceptable to the customer and/or regulator.
• Wide appreciation of safety standards and design/implementation techniques for safety.
• Engineering lifecycle.
• Commercial awareness.

• Strong people skills and able to work with staff at all levels.
• Good communicator (verbal and written).
• Able to lead reviews and workshops.
• Pragmatic and flexible.
• Motivated, energetic, persuasive and confident.
