Microsoft Commercial Software Engineering (CSE) is at the heart of helping our customers succeed with their technology initiatives and culture transformation. Our software engineering teams work side by side with our customers to create novel software and data solutions and help our customers be on a sustained path to success. We also help improve Microsoft’s cloud and artificial intelligence products through feedback based on our experiences.

What we do 

Our work at CSE spans across multiple industries (for example healthcare, automotive, manufacturing, finance and government) and multiple technical domains (for example IoT, big data, machine learning, distributed systems, DevOps pipelines and large scale cloud apps).  

In your new role, you would be working as a software engineer or a tech lead in initiatives similar to our earlier work in for example helping prevent rhino poaching, increasing use of autonomous vehicles at car factories and building an open source community around managing enterprise Kubernetes clusters.  

Our customers are Microsoft’s most strategic customers. Success for us is not just about our customer deploying our work into production but also about us sharing our principles, expertise and feedback. This helps customers transform their engineering practices and optimize their software delivery processes. It also enables Microsoft’s product engineering teams to improve our products and services based on customer feedback.

Responsibilities

You will join one of our Zürich based teams of 4-6 software engineers. Your team will work with our technical program management and data science peers to assist our customers to design and deliver software and data solutions. 

We use the languages, open source frameworks and services our customers use, while also helping them build more competence to follow the best practices in cloud architecture, CI/CD, data pipelines etc. Depending on the scenario – we work with Azure platform as a service products (for example Functions, Azure Kubernetes Service, CosmosDB, Eventhub, Azure DevOps …) or opt for open source alternatives. Technologies we regularly use include for example Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, C#, Java, Python. 

Our work is project based – we usually plan our work to deliver value with our customers through one or several 1-2 month milestones. We work in an agile manner, usually in sprints of 1-2 weeks. We follow sound engineering practices and the DevOps model to deploy testable code to production fast and often. Through retrospectives and a no-blame culture we strive to learn from our experiences and grow. You can find more information about the way we work in our engineering playbook.
