Job Description

What you do at AMD changes everything

At AMD, we push the boundaries of what is possible.  We believe in changing the world for the better by driving innovation in high-performance computing, graphics, and visualization technologies – building blocks for gaming, immersive platforms, and the data center.

Developing great technology takes more than talent: it takes amazing people who understand collaboration, respect, and who will go the “extra mile” to achieve unthinkable results.  It takes people who have the passion and desire to disrupt the status quo, push boundaries, deliver innovation, and change the world.   If you have this type of passion, we invite you to take a look at the opportunities available to come join our team.

Silicon Debug Engineer

The Role:

As a member of the AMD Server System Debug Silicon Team, you will use your hardware engineering skills and knowledge of CPU design to validate AMD’s CPU designs. Next, when parts fail, you will lead and participate in the effort to debug these fails using various modes, tools, and problem-solving to root cause and resolution. You will work as part of a broader team to help improve the time-to-market, quality, and reliability of AMD’s CPU Cores. You will be responsible to drive systematic improvements in debug methods, tools and features based on your findings and expertise.

The Person:

You approach challenges relentlessly with both critical thinking and creativity. You work as part of a team with strong communication and collaboration skills. You have a solid understanding of hardware (especially CPU’s), strong problem-solving skills, and drive to understand and learn. You enjoy hands-on work and like to take the initiative to drive issues to resolution. Does this describe you? If so, then join us!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in a variety of CPU debug efforts in silicon.
  • Work with debug and design teams to drive issues to root cause and resolution.

Preferred Experience:

  • CPU architecture, instruction set architecture, and/or design knowledge and/or experience.
  • Experience with silicon chip bring-up, validation and debug.
  • Familiarity with typical silicon debug features, infrastructure, and techniques.
  • System-level understanding of CPU/SoC architecture, DRAM/memory, PCIE and boards.
  • Linux command line and scripting skills.
  • Demonstrated patient and disciplined problem-solving in a dynamic situation.
  • Clear and concise interpersonal communication.
  • Able to collaborate and partner across teams and organizations.

Additional experience desired:

  • Understanding of the various aspects of a CPU product definition such as frequency, voltage, thermal design power, performance, etc.
  • Familiarity with microprocessor Design-for-Test (DFT) and Design-for-Debug (DFD) logic, use, and issues.
  • Experience in clocking, reset, power-up sequences and power management
  • Experience with x86 CPU’s and Instruction Set Architecture.
  • Software development experience programming in C++ and assembly.

Academic Credentials:

  • BS, MS, or PhD degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field of study.
