Job Description

We are expanding our open-source Health Interoperability team at Microsoft Research, focused on high-impact approaches to health data interoperability. In this role, you will work closely with the healthcare standards community including HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®), as well as stakeholders across the ecosystem of hospitals, care providers, insurers, electronic health record system developers. You will combine your software engineering skills with technical evangelism (building demos with documentation, blogging about key results, and building support for emerging technologies to drive adoption) and technical diplomacy (working with the healthcare and health standards community to advance the state of interoperability).  

 

You will contribute to specifications and implementation guides that enable apps and services to access data from diverse systems supporting clinical care, research, public health, and consumer access. You will develop prototypes, demonstrations, and reference implementations that support the healthcare data standards community. You will identify new areas of opportunity for healthcare data interoperability, working closely with the broader Microsoft Healthcare team to lay foundations for a health apps and services ecosystem with frictionless data exchange. 

Qualifications

Required:  

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or 6+ years industry experience in software engineering  
  • 5+ years industry experience building back-end web API services 
  • 5+ years industry experience building front-end web applications 

 

Preferred: 

  • Experience working with healthcare data standards including FHIR, HL7v2, and DICOM 
  • Full-stack web development including experience including work with diverse open source database technologies, backend frameworks, and frontend frameworks  
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with external teams (e.g., open source software development or standards development)  
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy throughout the development lifecycle, including gathering requirements from users/customers, characterizing design choices/trade-offs, and developing software implementations  
  • Experience building developer-facing tools and platforms
