The programme will be a combination of live phone in, news content and pre-recorded material. The role requires production preparation for the live segments of the show, therefore we’re looking for someone with production skills as well as broadcasting skills. You’ll be comfortable talking to callers and relating to the audience, bringing them in to the conversation that’s unfolding on air. You’ll be accomplished at handling big breaking stories and unflappable in a fast moving environment, you’ll be able to keep the audience updated and informed with a clear and impartial presenting style. You’ll be able to generate stories and ideas, as well as contribute to the creative treatment of them with guest and contributor ideas.
The presenter may be required to respond to breaking and developing news stories. Working as part of a small team you will need clear and confident decision-making skills. Broadcasting experience in speech radio is required. Formal journalism training would be an advantage.
This is an exciting opportunity and there will be scope to express creativity and editorial ambition in helping us to shape and develop the show. You’ll be operating as part of a small team and your role is the centre point for the programme, responsible for keeping the show flowing at the appropriate pace, introducing and interviewing guests, and providing links between segments that hold it all together, live from 01:00-05:00 Saturdays and Sundays.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are skilled at working in a team, as they will be working closely with the overnight producer and studio director. You will demonstrate strong editorial judgement and an understanding of the 5 Live target audience. Also needed is the ability to make editorial choices based on audience needs, working to the station strategy as set by the 5 Live Controller.
