About this role

We require a dynamic robust individual to lead a team of expert DevOps engineers to act as digital disruptors to overhaul the Wholesale systems estate and the way we design, test and run that estate. The team will lead the charge on transforming the way we build products, creating libraries of modular functionality, abstracted of individual product details, developed in a true agile development team. They will work across a number of in house developments, strategic OTS components and evolving older systems according to the needs of that particular area (volume, speed, re-use, etc.) in order to speed up product delivery, simplify and reduce the cost of provision and provide a true end customer digital experience. This role requires strong software development skills across home grown and commercial software applications. Strong knowledge of best practise software development. Commercial awareness and understanding of new and evolving technology.

Wholesale is losing market share and revenues are declining. We need to change the way we develop new products, services and service features and the way we expose those to the customer. We need to go Digital. We need to appeal to a wider market. We need to simplify and reduce the cost of provision and maintenance of those services.

You'll have the following responsibilities

Applies specialist expertise to deliver technical work that is typically unique, complex, and high impact across multiple domains and/or requiring both breadth and depth of domain knowledge.

Serves as technical expert and consultant to resolve complex and strategic issues, across wider industry and/or specific sectors, and develop bespoke or leading edge, technically complex solutions (e.g., relating to new, un-tested technology and/or large scale impact of products).

Provides direction and strategy to define product roadmaps within domain of expertise in a highly ambiguous, complex and multi-vendor technical environment.

Shares knowledge and thought leadership to advance team’s thinking, guide technical decisions and provide strategic level recommendations on high profile customer solutions.

Represents BT’s technical capabilities to internal and external stakeholders (including customers, vendors and suppliers) at senior levels and provides consultation.

Excellent knowledge of software 

Showcased expertise on a project or a specific piece of work or led a project outside of the core areas of your expertise. 

Collaborated on a new project with a recognised expert.

Led a cost reduction effort 

Allocated and directed a budget for part of the business. 

Handled a difficult people issue well – redundancy, disciplinary, re-organisation. 

Communicated BT's business strategy to multiple audiences. 

Managed a rapidly growing team or part of the business. 

Volunteered for extra responsibility such as project team involvement/leadership 

Created a recovery plan for a struggling part of the business
