Job Description

The CSX Data team is the main data science and engineering team inside the Connected Services & Experiences (CSX) team which is in turn part of the Windows + Devices (W+D) group.  Our data science team uses insights from data to improve the quality of experiences on our devices and services. The work of our approximately 60-strong data science staff spans PCs, Azure, Xbox, mobile devices, HoloLens, browsers, apps, the web, and more.  

 

We combine our data science work with business and engineering knowledge to provide unique insight into customer scenarios that are leading the data-driven culture within CSX and W+D.  We hire people with a desire to build great products and make business impact using statistical analysis, machine learning, experiments, data mining, data visualization, and more.  We welcome applications from diverse multi-disciplinary backgrounds, with analytical skills, engineering abilities, communication skills, business interests, relentless curiosity, and a desire to improve the experiences of more than one billion customers.

 

For this specific role, we are looking for a senior data scientist (level is flexible) deeply skilled in statistics and experienced using data to measure and improve product quality.  This role will be accountable for designing, helping implement, extending, adapting, and evaluating results of methodologies that are core to a new system we’re building to measure Windows quality from a customer’s point of view, called Perfect Day.  

Responsibilities

 

Use data exploration techniques to discover new opportunities within this problem area.

  • Interpret the results of analyses, validate approaches, and learn to monitor, analyze, and iterate to continuously improve the system and its impact.  
  • Engage with stakeholders to produce clear, compelling, and actionable insights that influence product and service improvements that will impact more than one billion customers. 
  • Participate in the peer review process and act on feedback while learning innovative methods, algorithms, and tools to increase the impact and applicability of your results. 

Over time, you will have opportunities to expand your focus beyond Perfect Day, as our team generally operates in a flexible project-focused way across an ever-changing variety of work focus areas.

Qualifications

Required skills and experiences for this role:

  • 2+ years of full time experience performing data analysis including applying statistics in a data scientist role
  • Formal education in statistics and resulting deep expertise in statistics.  Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or other quant-focused field
  • Experience working with product and service telemetry systems, including designing data science methodologies within those systems and using the outputs of such systems
  • Proficiency using tools like R, MATLAB, AMPL, SAS, and similar
  • Proficiency using one or more programming or scripting language like Python, Scala, or C# to work with data
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to interact with peers and stakeholders to define and drive product and business impact
  • Passion to learn world class techniques and tools

 Other desirable skills and experiences include:

  • Experience with experiments, machine learning, deep learning, anomaly detection, predictive analysis, text analysis, exploratory data analysis, and other areas of data science
  • Engineering experience using large data systems on SQL, Hadoop, Spark, etc.
