The Media Services team is responsible for encoding, publishing and playing all the BBC’s online audio and video content. It powers iPlayer, BBC Sounds, News, Sport and World Service.
Using pioneering, cloud-based technology at scale, we deliver live and on-demand content to thousands of different devices including PCs, phones, tablets, games consoles, smart speakers and smart TVs.
The BBC’s iPlayer and Sounds apps handle fifty million plays daily. Every day we publish over 1,000 hours of new content and several terabytes of new files. This content can range from podcasts encoded for regions with poor connectivity up to the highest quality UHD video content live for global sporting events such as Wimbledon and Euro 2020.
The Media Services team is a highly agile, fast moving and motivated multi-disciplinary team who take pride in the components they design, build and deliver.
As a team we succeed and fail together, working in a no-blame culture where we see failure as an opportunity to learn and improve.
The “Prepare and Transcode†team in Media Services, provide encodes of BBC content for all platforms, both audio and video. We do this live for over 200 video and audio streams and we also encode thousands of hours of on-demand content every month.
Before encoding, there is often preparation work needed on the audio and video which our team also provides.
The Prepare and Transcode team uses the latest cloud technologies to deliver text transcriptions of audio and video assets which aid our journalists and content discovery teams.
