About this role
This role provides design leadership of software application monitoring tools and solutions used to serve BT.
These tools are used to gather operational intelligence from applications and help ensure application stability. For example:
• CSOC use these tools to detect application problems ahead of time.
• Service Managers receive regular healthcheck reports that allow them to stay in touch with application performance.
• ASG teams can “google†search application logs in seconds when investigating incidents.
• Designers examine application performance trends looking at patterns to identify design weaknesses or pinch points.
As the specialist on these monitoring solutions your job will be to ensure that BT gets the most out of these tools.
The role may be responsible for managing several concurrent high visibility projects using agile methods in a fast-paced environment that may cross multiple business divisions.
You'll have the following responsibilities
Montoring Solutions
• Maintain a good knowledge of the monitoring products that BT uses e.g. Splunk and Datadog, their features and suitability for different scenarios.
• Provide consultancy on approach to monitor software applications within our available toolsets.
• Research new approaches to monitoring and report back on results.
• Using our toolsets implement monitoring solutions
Machine Data Matters
• Provide consultancy on monitoring applications and business issues, e.g develop innovative reporting and dashboards solutions.
• Maintain an online knowledge base to ensure that up to date information is readily available to the user community.
• Develop a fantastic relationship with the user community so that they have the knowledge and skills to get the most out of our toolsets.
Work With
• You will be working with the support teams who ensure that our monitoring solutions are running reliably day to day.
• Working with a diverse user community with differing skill levels.
• You will be working with the PaaS or software vendors to understand their roadmaps.
• Contribute and work with peers in Integration to ensure that our solutions continue to meet the business needs.
Pre Requisite Skills
• Experienced Linux OS User with knowledge of common shell commands and OS programs.
• Programming background is required from time to time for scripting up automation solutions. For example: Shell / Perl / Python or similar.
• Some experience of regular expressions is very useful and the ability to learn essesntial.
• Happy to spend time resolving technical challenges and able to work through difficult debugging scenarios researching until find a solution.
• Comfortable explaining complex technical issues in email, telephone, conference calls, face to face and small groups.
• Understanding of business KPIs, SLI, SLA, SLO, Toil
• Must have an eye for detail and appreciate the impact of errors in reporting and their business impact.
• Appreciation of the issues around data sampling and averaging
• Good understanding of Statistical operators and confidence with mathematical operations.
Understanding of
• Client / Server, IP, Networking, NATs, Firewalls, Load balancing.
• Computer authentication certificates, LDAP
• Deployment Automation technologies like Ansible etc
• Importance of Software code management to ensure integrity of our systems.
• Physical and Virtual hosting and Cloud Hosting.
• Contribute to setting up cloud and on-premise computing environments, installing software, configuring in conjunction with others such as other team members or operational teams
• Javascript would be very useful skill to bring to this roll for advanced dashboarding techniques.
Able to
• Learn the Splunk Processing Language. If you know SQL, Regex or Excel statistics then you will be right at home and training will be provided.
• An interest in UX design and graphical communication will be beneficial to ensure as user experience is at the forefront of what you will be working on.
• Identify improvements and better approaches to working with observability.
