About this role
The Specialist Engineer is responsible for automating the kind of work tied to running a production service that tends to be manual, repetitive, automatable, tactical, devoid of enduring value, and that scales linearly as a service grows. The goals are to:
• Minimize long-term toil like repetitive and reactive work through automation and enhanced efficiency while reducing the cost of failure
• Scale POC efforts and create capacity within the Operations team
• Transformaing services via "Engineering" efforts, to enable the SRE organization to scale up sublinearly with service size and to manage services more efficiently than either a pure Dev team or a pure Ops team
The role may be responsible for managing several concurrent high visibility projects using agile methods in a fast-paced environment that may cross multiple business divisions.
You'll have the following responsibilities
• Identify and caulate TOIL opportunities that exist across the estate, in an effort to to cap the time an SRE spends on toil to the minimally required amount.
• Drive Engineering solutions that are novel and intrinsically requires human judgment, in order to produce a permanent improvement in your service, and is guided by a strategy.
• Taking a design-driven approach to solving a problem— to help the team or the SREs handle a larger service, or more services, with the same level of staffing.
• Software Engineering: Writing or modifying code, in addition to any associated design and documentation work (enabling the writing of automation scripts, creating tools or frameworks, adding service features for scalability and reliability, or modifying infrastructure code to make it more robust).
• Systems Engineering: Configuring production systems, modifying configurations, or documenting systems in a way that produces lasting improvements from a one-time effort (including monitoring setup and updates, load balancing configuration, server configuration, tuning of OS parameters, and load balancer setup).
• Consulting on architecture, design, and productionization for developer teams.
You'll have the following skills & experience
• Developer that can create tools for infrastructure management and automation
• Familiarity with DevOps engineering practices and diverse technical problems.
• Comprehensive knowledge of important CI/CD pipeline tools, including Jenkins, GitLab and SonarQube.
• Be able to communicate the requirements to clients, and RCAs for Tool failures
• Strong communication skills
• Keen analytical skills
• Ability to decompose complex processes into understandable components
• Proficiency in automating and optimizing processes
• Competent in team building and team communication strategies
• Extensive knowledge of BT Standards and Processes
• Broad knowledge of and significant experience with Consumer products and services
• Experienced in working with other senior professionals and managers across Technology on BAU, tactical and strategic pieces of work.
• Experienced with the concepts of automation and innovation to add value, increase efficiency
• Solid understanding of software development life cycle models as well as expert knowledge of both Agile and traditional project management principles and practices and the ability to blend them together in the right proportions to fit a project and business environment
• Very effective interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, and team building
• Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demands
• In-depth knowledge and understanding of business needs with the ability to establish/maintain high level of customer trust and confidence
• Proven ability to lead software development projects and ensure objectives, goals, and commitments are met
• Creative approach to problem-solving with the ability to focus on details while maintaining the “big picture†view
