Job Description

Role Responsibility

This role looks after a portfolio of programmes within the BBC News communications team.

You will get to work on programmes and stories led by top BBC journalists such as Laura Kuenssberg, Katya Adler and Nick Robinson, as well as working to maximise the reach of our stories and raise the profile of some of our up and coming BBC journalists.

In addition you will lead on the communications strategy for some of BBC News’ flagship programmes such as the BBC News Channel, Today programme, World at One, Question Time, and Politics Live.

You will also work on reactive press stories about BBC News and draft statements and briefing documents which protect and defend the BBC’s world class reputation for trusted news and impartiality.

All publicists get the opportunity to work across BBC Panorama and the entire team is also expected to pick up additional incoming queries or seek out extra opportunities for BBC News.

The Ideal Candidate

Are you interested in news and current affairs? Savvy about social media? Able to keep a cool head under pressure?

We are looking for someone who has several years’ experience working in a busy press office with a track record of creating and delivering successful publicity campaigns.

Your experience should ideally include crafting press releases, pitching feature ideas, working with external journalists, creating social media content, as well as understanding how to write appropriately for different audiences.

Ideally you will have a good understanding of social media and digital communications as well as experience of coming up with ideas for creating digital content and be able to demonstrate your creative streak. Being able to create and edit videos is not essential but definitely a bonus.

You will be working alongside BBC News executives, journalists and presenters so you will need to have some experience of stakeholder management and be comfortable briefing people on relevant communication issues. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate experience in managing reputational issues.

This role requires being part of a rota to work on call over some weekends so you need to be prepared to work flexibly when required.
