Job Description

Job Introduction

The BBC Audience Intelligence team, based at MediaCity, Salford, are looking for a Principal Data Analyst for a permanent contract.

The Audience Intelligence team is part of the Audiences department and we work with the divisional Audiences teams in TV, Radio, News, Nations and Regions, Sport and 5 live and Children’s to deliver performance reporting solutions. This is achieved via the development and maintenance of dashboards, automating data processes, production of regular reporting and ad hoc requests. Alongside the Audiences team, we work with our service provider PwC who also provide reporting services for us. The Audience Intelligence team also work closely with Audience Products (BBC Audiences, the BBC’s internal site that provides data to the business), the Data Visualisation team and the Audience Data team.

Role Responsibility

The Principal Data Analyst reports into the Portfolio Head of Audiences for Audience Intelligence and is part of a team of six.

The successful candidate will continue to transform the department’s reporting to ensure greater efficiency through reducing manual processes and ensuring reporting is fit for the future. Our ambition is to ensure that audience data is easily accessible the most appropriate way and that stakeholder facing outputs are aligned to our overall strategy. The BBC aims to deliver ‘Value for All’ and our role is to facilitate this via the delivery of data that is relevant and accessible.

In conjunction with the Portfolio Head of Audiences you will be expected to deliver the vision through collaboration with Divisional Audiences teams and the team Project Manager. You will be responsible for the day to day delivery of outputs, overseeing the delivery of dashboards, regular reports and ad-hoc requests. This is a demanding role therefore you will not be expected to carry out traditional line management duties instead your focus will be developing and upskilling the team so experience in growing talent is a must. The team Project Manager will work with you and the team on the delivery of projects and ensure key milestones have been achieved and to ensure the roadmap is executed in a timely manner.

The successful candidate is expected to be highly proficient in using industry data sources, with a main focus on BARB as well as our own internal data sets, with focus on ‘Compass’ and ‘Pulse’ and other data sets available to us such as ATI. Therefore it is expected that you grow your knowledge on the job with the aim to become a key expert within the department. This ensures the team can deliver on being the centre of excellence for Audiences reporting.

Your role also requires you to work closely with the Data Visualisation team, Head of Audience Products and Audience Data as they will play a pivotal role in enabling this vision to come to life. Therefore it is essential that you have excellent interpersonal skills, are comfortable to collaborate and ultimately have a  passion for data analysis. You should be highly skilled in this area with demonstrable experience in delivering data and insights into a business and therefore comfortable liaising with others across the complimentary disciplines.

The Ideal Candidate

Ideally you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Knowledge and hands on experience of working with, extracting and analysing data from data lakes, including use of coding languages (SQL, Python, R, etc.)
  • Experience of setting up and maintaining automated reporting, for example using API calls and/or workflow software for data preparation / analysis (e.g. ETL tools like Alteryx)
  • Experience in developing reporting dashboards using a data visualisation software (e.g. Tableau)
  • Experience and/or knowledge of industry data sets such as BARB is desirable although if not you will be trained on these and will learn how to run this data via the relevant systems. However it is essential that you understand the complexities and nuances of industry data sets as it underpins all that we do.
  • Experience of developing and nurturing talent
  • Ability to act as a consultant on data and data sources, explaining methodologies and concepts in an easy to understand way for data literate colleagues and stakeholders less comfortable with data
  • Focused on efficient working and continuous improvement
  • An open, collaborative approach to working with colleagues from different disciplines, sharing knowledge, insight and best practice
