Job Description

Ballard Power Systems is looking to add a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to our Systems Engineering Team. You will work closely with other Systems engineers to develop customer focused solutions for delivery of conditioned power as part of our product offerings for motive applications including buses, trucks and light rail.   You will drive requirements development to help specify, select and validate DC/DC convertors and other power electronic devices for Ballard’s heavy-duty modules.

Responsibilities:

  • Requirements development for power electronics and converters
  • Support Hazard Analysis through participation in DFMEA’s
  • Develop functional safety requirements for power electronics and converters
  • Develop hardware safety requirements for power electronics and converters
  • Specification and selection of DC/DC converters for use in road vehicles, rail and other industries
  • Creation of Test plans and protocols
  • Interfacing with Suppliers
  • Evaluation of Technologies and capabilities
  • Evaluation of Compliance to codes, standards and regulations
  • Develop component design requirements from system requirements
  • Support Certification and compliance testing(Environmental, EMC/EMI)
  • Failure Analysis of power electronics and converters
  • Keeping up-to-date with industry technologies and developments

 Requirements:

  • Must have a technical diploma or engineering degree from an Electrical / Electronics / Mechatronics program
  • Must have at least 7 years’ experience in an electrical or electronics engineering field
  • Experience with power electronics used in road vehicles or other mobile equipment
  • Experience with Codes, Standards and compliance issues of electrical systems in road vehicles
  • Experience with ISO6469-3, LV123 or other electric road vehicle safety standards
  • Experience with DC/DC’s and knowledge of architectures and semi-conductor technologies
  • Experience working with CAN communication and networks
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing or quality assurance role
  • Experience with testing of electronic devices
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and good listening skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment

Additional Consideration:

  • Knowledge of fuel cell technology
  • Experience in automotive or mobile equipment design
  • Experience with functional safety standards such as ISO26262
  • Experience with Automotive test standards such as ISO16750
  • Experience with EMC/EMI compliance and standards
  • Experience with PCB design and Altium software
  • Ability to read Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
  • Troubleshooting skills with DMM and oscilloscope
