Job Description

Port of Tauranga is New Zealand's largest port and international freight gateway. Last year, our team of highly skilled mariners assisted in the safe passage of over 3,200 vessels movements through Tauranga Moana.

About the roles:

The opportunity has arisen for two talented individuals to join the Port's Marine Team as Pilot Launchmaster and Pilot Launchmaster / Relief Tug Master.

Pilot Launchmasters are responsible for ferrying our pilots out to board an incoming vessel, and bringing them back to shore after a vessel departure. This position would suit an experienced commercial skipper - we require a minimum Skipper Restricted Limits (

24m) licence or equivalent, backed up by commercial marine experience.

Tug Masters are responsible for the care, maintenance and operation of our fleet of three Port tugs. Our relief role has exposure to both Pilot Launchmaster and Tug operations, requiring a minimum Skipper Restricted Limits (

500GT) license. Candidates will need to be spatially and situationally aware with the confidence to operate high-powered modern tugs.

The roles both report directly to our Marine Operations Manager and are full-time positions functioning within 24/7 rosters to meet the Port's operational requirements.

To be successful in your application, you will be:

  • A skilled and experienced mariner;
  • Passionate about learning new skills and developing your marine expertise in a commercial environment;
  • An effective communicator who deals with people in a professional and considerate manner;
  • An innovative problem solver and confident decision maker;
  • Strongly focused on health, safety and the environment; and
  • Positive and approachable.

Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand and a valid COVID-19 vaccination passport are required. Port of Tauranga is a drug and alcohol free workplace. The successful applicant will also be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and background checks.

Who are we?

As New Zealand's largest and most efficient cargo gateway, the Port is committed to driving national prosperity and providing superior service to our customers. With a portfolio of associate and subsidiary companies, we pride ourselves on delivering long-term value for our shareholders.
