Job Description

BBC Wales’ mission is to fire a nation’s imagination. As the nation’s most trusted and valued broadcaster, we exist to help audiences discover and make sense of Wales – and to champion the best talent and the boldest ideas for national and UK audiences. And we do all this on a canvas big enough to make a difference, not just to our audiences, but to Wales itself.

We have recently completed a transformation project relocating to a new purpose-built broadcast headquarters in Central Square, Cardiff.

Central Square is the first BBC centre in the UK to use IP core for controlling cameras, TV editing and output. We have the most modern broadcast facilities in the UK, giving production teams enormous flexibility in how they produce productions.

The technology team provides support, services, software development and project management to all of the teams in BBC Wales.  The Operations Engineer sits within a team of Engineers who provide 24x7 technical support for all BBC Wales systems.

Role Responsibility

  • Working on a 24/7/365 shift pattern to provide Operational support for industry leading systems and applications used to produce BBC Wales output .
  • Use a diverse range of monitoring tools to spot service impacting issues.
  • Technical diagnosis and resolution of incidents impacting live services.
  • Logging all incidents accurately, and documenting investigative activities. Managing incident and escalating as appropriate and as per defined processes.
  • Implementing appropriate contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events.
  • Ensure efficient and appropriate communication to key stakeholders through the incident lifecycles.
  • Thorough handover of incident and environmental information through shift changes.
  • Collaborate with the wider Technology and operations teams including developers and editors to ensure best operational practice
  • Work on improving our documentation and processes – ensuring all learning is shared, and improving the support team as a whole.
  • Keeping abreast of operational changes in a fluid environment, ensuring that actions are taken in line with current best practice.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement – working creatively to improve working practices.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a self-motivated, confident Broadcast Engineer who ideally has experience in an operational support role and is comfortable with broadcast technologies. The individual should be flexible in their approach to work and imaginative in finding solutions to business challenges.

The ideal candidate will have experience in some of the following criteria:

  • Experience of providing broadcast technical support in a fast-moving media environment
  • Broad technical knowledge of IT and IP based systems
  • Demonstrable experience of Technical diagnosis and resolution of incidents impacting Radio, News, Production and/or TV studios
  • Post Production expertise - in particular AVID knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of effectively communicating technical information to a wide audience
  • Qualifications and/or demonstrable practical experience in a technical discipline relevant to the role, e.g. Information Technology or Broadcast Engineering
