Join us as an Operational Development Engineer, and you’ll join one of the most exciting and ambitious projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.

At Hinkley Point C (HPC), we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

As an Operational Development Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the Operate the Plant Programme Manager and Operational Documentation Lead with the delivery of the Operating Documentation, in accordance with the overall HPC project schedule.

You will perform operational procedure technical reviews to ensure that the delivery of HPC meets operational safety & performance requirements. As an experienced Nuclear Engineer, you will mentor and help future operations recruits in their development.

Pre-Operations is split into the following programmes of work aligned to meet the current needs of the business:

Asset Management: covering equipment reliability, management of work, technical standards, maintenance strategy, Plant Service Inspection/In Service Inspection.

Operational Capability: in charge of staffing strategy and resourcing approach, competency development strategy, simulator training and instructors recruitment, being the intelligent customer to Nuclear Skill Alliance.

Technical and Safety: covering Radiation Protection arrangements, Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety, Technical Coordination.

Operate the Plant: responsible for recruitment and training of control room operators and technicians, delivery of operating procedures, safety rules, field operators, handover processes and simulators.

Each programme is being delivered by a team of Operational Development staff led by a Programme Manager, working with stakeholders in other areas of the Project.

What you’ll be doing…

• Planning, monitoring and managing the activities, risks, and associated requirements relevant to the Pre-Operations activities assigned to you.
  • • Normal Operating domain through Operational Technical Specification (OTS) and Hazard Technical Specifications (HTS) and Normal Operating Procedures
    • Fault Operating domain through the State Orientated Approach and Severe accident approaches
• Assessing the design and equipment contract information for certain systems to ensure they will deliver our aims of enhanced safety and performance during the operational phase.
• Providing input into the development of standards, procedures and arrangements which support safe and reliable plant operations.
• Maintaining interfaces (technical & functional) with other HPC departments (such as Design Authority, Owner’s Engineering, Construction Planning, Safety), Edvance and DPN to ensure that future operation requirements are fully integrated into the HPC design in a safe and sustainable manner.
• Providing input to the management of Technical Issues with the potential to impact future plant availability.
• Researching operating experience from the wider nuclear industry applicable to the HPC project and promoting its use and application to achieve World Class performance
• Maximising effective use of time and personal ability; working flexibly within own range of competence; undertaking the appropriate training and development to extend skills and abilities to meet the needs of the business.

Who you are…

Your background may include some of the following:

• Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in relevant science or engineering discipline.
• Significant, demonstrable experience in the nuclear sector preferred
• PWR design knowledge preferred, NPP or research reactors design knowledge will also be considered.
• Experience of developing and reviewing technical information including OTS/HTS
• Proactive analytical thinker with an ability to work with minimal supervision and on your own initiative.
• Good understanding of quality arrangements required in UK regulated environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience of working within a project organisation.
• An understanding of human performance error prevention tools.
• Graduates with a qualification in an appropriate science or engineering discipline will be considered.
