Job Description

Our mission is to break down the barriers of today to release the potential of tomorrow. Join us today and release yours.

There are two things that we want to share with anyone considering joining us.

Firstly, we’ve got big ambitions for our colleagues and the future of the organisation. These include our vision that inclusion and accessibility drive every conversation we have and every decision we make. We want our workforce to fully represent the communities and customers we serve, because a diverse business is a better business. We value every colleague, their diversity and the contribution that they make. When we say you’re welcome at BT, we really mean it.

Secondly, the one thing the pandemic has taught us is that a lot of current and future colleagues, where and when possible, want to embrace hybrid working. Therefore, we are introducing smart working at BT. Smart working means having the flexibility to choose, as a team, how and where you work depending on your team’s deliverables and needs; when you are at your shared core location to connect with others and when not. It may not be for every role, and, as part of the recruitment process, you’ll have the chance to discuss smart working and how it might work for the job you are applying for.

About this role

The BT Media and Broadcast design team provide the networking used by key broadcasters around both the UK and worldwide including the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. If you’ve even watched a Premier League football match or a Freeview channel, this uses the BT Media transmission networks that you’ll be working on.

You’ll be designing bespoke end to end solutions that, while using standard Cisco, Juniper, ADVA & AppearTV network components, are put together in a way that meets the unique needs of our customers to get broadcast quality video and other media from source to destination – e.g., this could be from a set of cameras in a Stadium to the viewer's set top box or tablet.

You’ll be working with an ever-changing set of technical requirements, supporting our customer-facing sales colleagues - responding to RFPs for services all around the world to distribute live broadcast TV, audio, and other content.

Technically - you will need hands on experience of either Cisco or Juniper equipment and be confident with designing with Multicast, MPLS & IP routing protocols.

You'll have the following responsibilities

• Providing Engineering Design leadership and steer, guiding and supporting aspects of the Media and Broadcast areas; specifically in your producing designs for Layers 1, 2 and 3 connectivity.

• Making expert recommendations to technical and business decision makers.

• An advocate of Transformation activities across the Business Unit – e.g., seeking positive outcomes from adoption of Agile methodologies and Automation of repeatable tasks.

• Continually learning to be acknowledged as the Subject Matter Expert within Media and Broadcast on the network solutions we offer.

• Mentoring junior members of the team.

• Supporting our Sales and Product colleagues – responding to commercial bids – for the Request for Information/Proposal we frequently receive and respond to.

You'll have the following skills & experience

• Ideally you will be from a Service provider or Fin-Tec background

• You will have solid knowledge of designing high availability, high throughput IP & MPLS networks.

• You will have had extensive hands-on experience of Cisco and/or Juniper network equipment to develop and test new or modified designs.

• You will have a proven ability to develop High level & Low-level Design documents, driving peer reviews to promote a right first-time mindset.

• A working knowledge of Multicast is an advantage, hands-on experience is definitely of interest.

• You will be familiar with link-diversity / separacy / capacity that will affect overall reliability – typically using Carrier Ethernet products

• You will likely have a track record of being a lead contributor individually, whilst provide direction to others.

ʉۢ Experience of designing carrier/service-provider IP networks.

• Experience of leading RFPs, Vendor Selection and helping to win new business

• Experience of designing high availability and international networks

• Technical Experience in a Media/TV/broadcast organisation.

• B.Eng. / M.Eng. Degree or equivalent industry experience.

• Professional certifications from Cisco (or Juniper equivalent) CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, DevNet

• Experience of an Agile Delivery method.
