Manager, Performance Engineering

 

The Role:

AMD’s Server Performance Optimization team is looking for a hands-on engineering manager to help us manage our growth as we take the market by storm. Candidate will help by managing both people and projects.  Their primary goal is to create, lead, and grow a talented team of engineers optimizing system workloads across multiple areas of the following areas:

 

  1. Core Performance
  2. Memory performance
  3. Ethernet performance
  4. Storage performance
  5. Compute efficiency

 

The Person:

Are you an accomplished manager who enjoys solving challenging problems?  Do you have a knack for coaching and mentoring team members? Are you hands-on and capable of digging in with the engineers when needed? If so, we may have a position for you.

 

Responsibilities:

This position is primarily focused on growing the next generation of leaders. Candidate will be expected to understand the corporate value of the team and help map this to team member strengths and potential. Candidate will be expected to have regular 1:1s with team members and become advocates for helping the members thrive at AMD.

 

Ideal candidate will be well versed in system optimization and workload characterization. Candidate must be comfortable setting up, running, and analyzing the performance of system workloads.  They must have a strong understanding of computer architecture and be capable of translating that knowledge into analyzing and optimizing performance. Potential improvements could be in the platform configuration, the operating system, the compiler, the BIOS, firmware, or processor architecture. Candidate must be capable of studying and understanding complex systems including hardware and software interactions. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong mentoring and coaching skills
  • Proven experience managing and leading engineering teams
  • Prior experience in optimizing performance (client, server, system, or embedded)
  • Strong system and software engineering background ranging from application level to BIOS and below
  • Strong communications skills. Able to summarize complex problems for executive as well as drill down to details with architects and engineers
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills including the ability to analyze current behavior, identify potential areas for improvement and design of experiments
  • Comfortable setting up servers, changing hardware and installing server SW
  • Must be a self-starter and self-motivated.
  • Previous experience with system and software performance debug tools
  • Strong systems level debug including networking, storage, compute, clusters, etc.
  • Experience developing and optimizing software for various silicon architectures.
  • Requires a minimum of 4 years managing technical teams and 7 years in a technical role

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of modern micro-architectures
  • Prior experience optimizing workloads for a NUMA environment
  • Prior experience creating micro-benchmarks and system level workloads
  • Experience in cloud environments
  • Experience developing and /or running industry standard benchmarks

 

 Academic Credentials:

  • BS or MS (MS preferred) in computer architecture, computer science, computer engineering or related field.
