Reporting to the Head of World Museum, this is a key role in the World Museum senior curatorial team, responsible for collections containing material culture from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (approximately 40,000 items).
Leading the Global Cultures curatorial team, working across NML and with a wide range of individuals and organisations, in the UK and across the world, you will make the collections and their associated information accessible and available in an honest and transparent way.
You will build open, equitable and long-lasting relationships with relevant source and diaspora communities; research and develop the collections and deliver programmes that align with NML’s mission to create memorable experiences, challenging expectations in ways that are welcoming, honest, educational, trustworthy, respectful, and inclusive. This will include working with other NML departments, such as International Slavery Museum, to develop cross-organisational approaches to collections.
To be successful in this role, you will have extensive proven experience of leading and managing a team, of working with similar collections and a high level of knowledge of contemporary thinking and action in the subject. You will be a highly skilled communicator, experienced in communicating research and/or diverse histories and complex narratives to a wide range of audiences, contributing to and engaging positively with contemporary public debates. You will have demonstrable experience of fostering and maintaining meaningful and honest relationships with stakeholders, internally and externally.
