Job Description

About us

Transport for NSW keeps our State moving by providing safe, integrated and efficient transport systems. We put our customers at the centre of everything we do – and we do a lot. We connect people, communities and industry and manage how they use our road, rail and maritime networks and services, and even active modes like walking and cycling. The work we do connects the journeys you take every day.

We are a state government organisation made up of more than 28,000 people and we're in the middle of delivering the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia's history. We work across planning, policy and procurement, harnessing data and technology to develop smarter and more adaptive transport solutions.

That means job opportunities in metropolitan and regional areas right across NSW – you have the chance to be part of creating a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

About the Division

The Regional and Outer Metropolitan division is focused on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure.

The Opportunity

The Land Use Planner (Development Assessment Engineer) is a case officer within Development Services team, which supports the Community and Place Branch dedicated to the geographic portfolio in the North Region of NSW. This role considers and responds to planning proposals and development applications that have potential to impact on TfNSW interests.

The role will suit a Planning or Engineering professional with demonstrated experience in roles related to Development Assessment, Statutory Land Use Planning, Traffic engineering and Transport Planning within NSW. We will also consider people from other backgrounds with relevant skills and experience. Ideally candidates having 5-10 years in a development assessment role with NSW Local Government or State Agencies will be best suited for the role.

Analytical thinking and an understanding of the NSW planning system are key for the role. You need to have the ability to review multiple development applications, in a time critical environment and assess their transport impacts – this requires high level problem-solving, creativity, and a focus on achieving balanced outcomes for transport customers.

Some key responsibilities of the role include:

Undertaking precinct and place-based planning and development assessments, ensuring a customer-centric focus and appropriate engagement of internal and external stakeholders.

Meeting statutory obligations within required timeframes in responding to development consent authorities

Ensuring proposed precinct and place-based land use development does not compromise Transport network safety or efficiency

Ensuring TfNSW requirements for land use plans and development consents are understood by the appropriate stakeholders, by liaising and negotiating internally within the branch and externally with other Government agencies (transport, environment and planning agencies), Council officers, and public and private organisations.

Work collaboratively across the branch regions to build a consistent approach to land use planning, assessment and precinct and place-based management within the Community and Place Branch.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You will need to be able to build rapport and develop strong stakeholder relations across multiple internal and external sources. You will need to leverage these relationships to seek the appropriate advice and information required to inform your decisions, as well as negotiate outcomes and overcome challenges.

The role supports a variety of work in the North Region of NSW – this encompasses an area from the Hawkesbury River to the Tweed River on the Queensland Border, out to the Hunter Valley and New England Tablelands regions.  The preferred location for the role is Grafton, however we have offices at a number of locations in the area and encourage people regionally based in New South Wales to apply as we have flexible working arrangements available.

**Please note –The position description for Development Services Case Officer attached is for this role (the name is slightly different for advertising purposes).
