Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity

The Manager Governance reports to the Hautū, Kaupapa Hiranga me Mana Whakahaere - Deputy Secretary, Critical Projects and Governance. This position is one of the tier 4 management positions which work to ensure the Puni outputs give effect to Te Puni Kōkiri's strategic direction by leading a specialised team to provide high quality governance oversight, advice and guidance to the Executive Leadership Team, Governance Boards, and any sub-committees as required.

This role will focus on:

  • Building capacity in governance.
  • The development, implementation and maintenance of the organisation's governance development plan, and the delivery of quality advice and support to kaimahi on governance engagement and activity.
  • Exercising functional, technical, and professional responsibility for the Governance team of the Ministry.
  • Developing and leading the delivery of a work programme with a strong emphasis to ensure:
  1. that there are innovative strategic planning frameworks and processes in place to ensure best practise in organisational governance activity; and
  2. the smooth running of all board meetings supported by the Governance Team.

The Manager, Governance will work collaboratively and flexibly as the work arises.

Success in this role will mean the Deputy Secretary and Executive Leadership Team are able to focus on the core business of Te Puni Kōkiri.

Ko wai koe | About you

  • Managerial experience in a medium to large organisation.
  • Experience in leading Governance related work in government.
  • Experience in providing free and frank, evidence-based advice to leadership, ideally on governance, performance, risk, capability, and funding at a senior level.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with and influence senior leaders across a range of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in developing and implementing a range of ideally governance-related initiatives within a client focussed environment.
  • Extensive working knowledge of a broad range of processes related to operating within the public sector and government.
  • The ability to work in collaboration with peers.
  • A high level of personal integrity and courage.
  • Strength in leading change and coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Comfort in operating in a tikanga / kaupapa Māori environment.

Desirable

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is highly desirable.
  • A degree of fluency in Te Reo Māori is desirable.
