Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University is an award-winning international concept with a long history of working with children. Proudly hosted through a collaboration between Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) and Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki | Lincoln University (LU), Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University is the Aotearoa New Zealand derivative of Children's University Adelaide which leads the program for Australasia.

Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University offers superior educational experiences for children outside of school learning activities and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates and is a national social enterprise. It promotes continuous learning, encourages participation and inspires independent learning - aiming to raise young people's aspirations for higher education and open their eyes to the world of possibility.

The role of Kairuruku Puni | Puni Coordinator will work closely with the Programme Manager to embed and grow the Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University (TMMCU) programme. You will be responsible for whanaungatanga, building relationships, through student outreach and coordination of extra curricula learning activities and volunteering opportunities in schools. You will provide manaakitanga and tiakitanga to tamariki, their whānau. The model leverages local educational and learning activity providers to create 'Public Learning Destinations' and has a strong emphasis on experience as a significant learning tool. The Kairuruku Puni will work in a culturally responsive way and ensure Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University gives tamariki and taiohi, young people, the opportunity to enjoy taking part in fun, exciting and innovative experiences - and gain recognition for their involvement. Your passion for young people's development will combine with your excellent communication skills and ability to build strong, positive relationships to make you a strong fit for this role. You are likely to have a degree in education or experience working in an educational or community environment.

To be successful in this role you will also:

  • have an active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga (protocols and processes), kawa (rules) of cultural practice and traditions as guided by mana whenua (ngā hapÅ« o Ngāi Tahu) and valuing te reo Māori
  • be a self-starter with excellent initiative and planning skills
  • have an aptitude for selling and promotions
  • enjoy being in front of people, comfortable with public speaking and presentations
  • work flexibly and know how to capitalise on opportunities as they arise
  • have a proven commitment to fostering and promoting a bicultural programme
  • competency in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga is an advantage.

You will work with the Programme Manager (based at the University of Canterbury) and the Learning Coordinator (based at Lincoln University) to grow the Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children's University (TMMCU) programme in local schools.
