Job Introduction

The BBC Mobile Playback Platform, part of Media Services, is an integral part of the BBC's Digital strategy, delivering consistent user experiences and core functionality across the BBC's mobile estate.

As a Junior Software Engineer within Mobile Playback you’ll be joining a team of engineers developing our Media Player components - the core playback engine of all video and audio content across the BBC online. The BBC is recognised throughout the world for the quality of the content that we produce and the programmes that we broadcast. We are looking for high calibre developers with a passion for technology to help us transform the experience for our audience consuming media in the digital age.

The media components we build are right at the heart of the BBC’s best­ loved products including iPlayer, Sounds, News and Sport to name just a few.  Whether you’re catching up on last night’s episode of EastEnders, listening to Radio 1 or jumping right into live sporting action, our media player provides a robust, reliable and consistent playback experience.

Role Responsibility

As a Junior Software Engineer within Mobile Playback, you will be responsible for developing software for the download, playback and decryption of media for the whole of the BBC mobile estate.

We don’t expect anyone to have experience of all of the below but this just gives an example of the technologies and practices we value:

• Work closely with other team members to write software collaboratively through the use of pair programming, code review and continuous delivery. 
• Happy to work on both Android and iOS codebases.
• Enthusiasm for writing clean, well documented, and testable code.
• The ability to question the way we work, and the tools and processes we use - we’re always aiming to make our team the best it can be.
• Good communication skills - a great candidate will be able to talk to other developers, to non-developers, and is happy to communicate with people remotely across multiple BBC sites.
• Curious and embraces change - we’re always learning new technologies and requirements often change, you’ll enjoy this challenge.
• Goal orientated - you’ll enjoy finishing the job by developing the final details.

The Ideal Candidate

We don’t expect you to be an expert on any of these, but some use of them, along with an understanding of their underlying principles, would be great. Don’t feel that you can’t apply if you don’t have all of the skills.

You’ll work with, and be mentored by, a friendly development team, and the BBC will provide many opportunities for learning as you progress.

We would like ideal candidates to have experience with:

• Swift or Objective C
• Kotlin or Java
• Software testing practices and frameworks
• System administration (e.g. Linux)
• Test Driven Development
