Head of UK Tax, Customs

Based on a holistic UK and Irish customs, export control and tax management system, the BMW UK and Irish entities’ customs and tax function is responsible for a fully comprehensive customs, export control compliance and tax, advisory, risk management and reporting service to BMW UK and Irish entities and non-UK and Ireland BMW Group companies operating in or with interests in UK or Ireland. With the aim of optimizing BMW Group’s customs and tax cost and cash position, effective tax rate and external tax & customs consultancy costs. Secure supply-chain for production plants, sales company and customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the customs, export control and tax governance and ensure that BMW UK and Irish entities and all non-UK and Ireland  BMW Group companies operating in UK and Ireland are fully compliant with UK and Irish direct tax incl. transfer pricing, indirect tax, customs and export control legislative requirements: In particular the timely and accurate filing of all necessary returns and documentation as well as the payment of all tax and customs duties in the correct amounts and at the appropriate times, the timely and cost-efficient processing (inbound and outbound borders) for all production and non-production materials from customs perspective, the full compliance with all export control related requirements including embargo, goods-specific and entity-specific controls, the use of Supply Chain Security programs to optimize risk ratings and improve clearance times and the investigation, implementation and monitoring  of the benefits associated with such programs (i.e. AEO).
     
  • Advise (and monitor compliance) in respect of all tax (both including grants, subsidies, simplifying procedures), customs (incl. customs procedures such as FTAs, preferential trade programs, etc.) and export control opportunities to optimize the BMW Group’s effective tax rate, tax and customs cost or clearance times as well as cash position in compliance with all laws and regulations as well as BMW internal guidelines.
     
  • Ensure correct internal and external tax reporting (and its processes) to BMW Group internal departments and to the BMW Group function for tax, customs and export control and ensure tax, customs and export control risk management processes to be in place and efficient based on a holistic UK and Irish tax, customs and export control management system.
     
  • Monitor, advise and communicate the latest developments in UK and Irish tax, customs and export control legislation and case law. Depending on the development alert the relevant Managers at HQ or provide them with proposals to reduce potential risks (or optimize processes, costs or timelines) for the BMW Group entities.
     
  • Act as first point of contact of all queries for BMW UK and Irish entities for UK and Irish tax, customs and export control authorities and ensure all such queries are resolved in the best interests of BMW Group entities
     
  • As network partner assure the effectiveness of the customs, export control and tax network.

Qualifications

  • University (Master/ Bachelors) degree (Business, Law, Economy & Commerce) with in-depth knowledge of international tax, customs and export control as well as specific knowledge as concerns the special programs in place for the automotive industry in UK and Ireland
  • Highly motivated, self-organised, independent individual with minimum 8-10 years of professional experience in a reputable international consulting firm, law firm, tax and/or customs department of an international group or tax and/or customs authorities with vast automotive background
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in UK and Irish tax, customs and export control law;
  • Excellent ability and excellent network to manage relationships with Senior Tax and Customs Officials of UK and Irish government and authorities
  • Additional knowledge and experience in accounting preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, motivated, self-driven and team skills in an intercultural work area is essential
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good knowledge of MS Office
  • Experience with internationally used customs, tax and export control IT systems beneficial
  • Project experience
  • Recognised tax or customs qualification
