An opportunity has arisen for a Head of Division (HoD) within UKDT. The current vacancy is for the Head of Global Banks (UGB) within UKDT which reports directly to the Executive Director. This role currently includes responsibility for the supervision of two Globally Systemic Banks, HSBC and Standard Chartered, as well as oversight of our supervisory approach to the operational resilience of UK Deposit Takers. The HoD leads a division of around 40 staff, including: setting the divisional strategy; leading the supervision of the firms for which they are responsible; coordinating the teams to ensure key deliverables are met; motivating and developing staff; managing resources within budgets; and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally, which may include international travel.

Whilst the immediate vacancy is in UGB, we will also consider filling any other UKDT HoD vacancies that arise as a result of appointments made through this recruitment process.

All HoDs are part of UKDT’s Senior Leadership Team, which collectively sets the Directorate’s strategy and are responsible for its implementation. They are integral to delivering the Bank’s strategic goals, both through UKDT’s work and through wider cross-Bank working and collaboration, including attending a number of committees.

The demands on UKDT’s time are great, and the Senior Leadership therefore has a sharp focus on prioritisation and promoting the wellbeing of staff across UKDT. UKDT places a very high premium on making the Bank a more diverse, inclusive and empowering place to work. Our HoDs are expected to lead by example and create opportunities and the space for themselves and their Divisions to contribute to the Bank and UKDT’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) agendas.

 

Detailed Description:

  • UKDT HoDs take part in the leadership of UKDT, through developing the strategy, managing the budget, developing the people/talent strategy, and oversight of the business plan.
  • UKDT plays a central role in delivering the Bank’s Mission and has to manage a broad range of work so our HoDs must be able to effectively prioritise work across UKDT and put staff wellbeing front and centre.
  • Al HoDs also participate in the wider PRA and Bank Senior Leadership teams, making a substantial contribution to delivering the Bank’s strategic goals both within UKDT and through cross-Bank collaboration. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to attend and take an active role in a number of cross-Bank committees and working groups.
  • HoDs are expected to ensure a clear supervisory strategy is set for all firms within their division using forward looking judgement; identifying and mitigating the key risks to delivery and taking decisions in line with the PRA’s decision making framework.
  • HoDs are responsible for ensuring good working relationships continue with senior staff at the firms and other regulators.
  • HoDs are responsible for ensuring the work of their Division as well as the broader Directorate, PRA and the Bank is understood, credible and trusted to internal and external stakeholders, undertaking international travel as necessary.
  • UKDT HoDs have multiple direct reports and overall management responsibility for staff in the division (on average ~40 people). They are responsible for ensuring that appropriate objectives are set and assessments of performance against those objectives are carried out.

Role Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Strong leadership and management skills – You should be a great people manager who enjoys supporting and developing staff with an ability to create and implement a shared vision, deliver outcomes through the work of others and set an example through effective prioritisation.
  • Alignment with the Bank’s values – You will be expected to foster a diverse, inclusive and open culture within the division encouraging debate and challenge amongst staff - you should be able to role-model the behaviours that engender this kind of work environment.
  • Good judgement and analytical skills – You should be highly capable of understanding the prudential risks posed by a variety of firms and business models; exercise good judgement in determining effective strategies and be able to proactively identify risks. You should also demonstrate strong decision making skills especially in high pressure situations.
  • Strong strategic leadership – Given the breadth of the division’s work, this role would suit someone who is able to stay connected to a wide range of issues and translate this into connecting the dots across different workstreams, contributing to thought leadership at the Bank and driving delivery of strategic goals.
  • Effective influencing and stakeholder management – You should be good at maintaining effective relationships even at times when those relationships may need to become adversarial; commanding credibility with senior management in firms and other regulators and communicating clearly to a variety of audiences.
