Job Description

At Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft, our purpose is to build a better world through the power of play. We enable millions to create and play together, connect people across the globe, and foster a community that is among the most active and passionate in the world. Our community is global and incredibly diverse. When we are developing anything within our franchise, we keep this in mind. We want everyone to not only feel included in Minecraft, but also to see themselves in what we make. Our goal is for the Mojang Studios team to be as diverse as our community.

As a data scientist in the Data & Analytics (DnA) team, you will uncover insights to help Mojang optimize our response to safety issues, bugs, and crashes based on player impact. You will collaborate to find new data sources and build on the work of other data scientists, data engineers, and analysts. To keep your insights actionable and relevant, you will partner with teams across the studio like quality, release management, game platform and game development.

Responsibilities

  • Apply a variety of methods from machine learning to basic statistics to understand the impact of quality and safety on players.
  • Partner with producers, testers, and developers to translate ambiguous ideas into actionable hypotheses and stay in sync on context and priorities.
  • Deliver impactful insights in a fast-paced environment with real, sometimes flawed, data.
  • Describe data insights in a clear and compelling way to non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience applying advanced statistical methods and machine learning models to real-world data.
  • 2+ years of experience querying data with SQL-like languages, SparkSQL and Databricks experience is a bonus.
  • 2+ years of experience analyzing data using Python or other statistical languages, PySpark is a bonus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or statistics field, Computer Science graduate education is a bonus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Interest in games required, bonus if experience in gaming or entertainment industry.
