Job Description

This is an exciting role offering the opportunity to work at the heart of monetary policy and to engage directly with MPC members on questions of monetary strategy. The role could be of interest to a research economist, or a non-researcher, and particularly those who are interested in building their technical skills.

While the primary policy interface is with the MPC, there may also be opportunities to engage with other areas of the Bank (especially those serving the FPC).

A key part of the role will be to produce high-quality analysis to feed into forecast round discussions with the MPC on the latest monetary strategy issues. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to spend at least 50% of their time on research (depending on preferences and background), or (for a non-researcher) to be allocated ring-fenced time to develop their technical skills.  The jobholder will need to:

  • Link up the latest academic thinking on monetary policy with the policy issues facing the MPC and the wider Bank.
  • Assist with the development of optimal policy techniques and models to improve the team's capability in providing strategy analysis to the MPC.
  • Engage with MPC members and Governors via speeches and briefing.
  • Work with others on the team and in the Directorate to deliver medium-term projects (e.g. recent project on the monetary transmission mechanism, strategic priority projects around the future of the monetary policy toolkit and balance sheet).
  • (If appropriate to the successful candidate) Conduct original research on BEAR research themes (with an expectation that the jobholder would be seconded to the Research Hub at some point).

Minimum Essential Criteria

  • Strong communication skills.
  • An ability to think and work independently.
  • A collaborative working style, with experience of working with and managing a diverse set of stakeholders
  • A track record of taking an inclusive approach in your work
  • For a researcher role: PhD-level or equivalent training in economics or demonstrated ability to produce high quality, independent research published in academic journals

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of monetary strategy, macroeconomic models and/or forecasting.
