Job Description

It's an exciting time to be in Invercargill and join a future focused Council.

Waihōpai Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city and the heart and hub of Southland. We're known for our lush green spaces like Queens Park, our long summer daylight hours and our local legend Burt Munro.

Our city has character, charm and a laidback atmosphere. There's outstanding nature reserves, Ōreti Beach, the Waihōpai River, a lively restaurant scene and a sensible gridded layout with wide streets and a 10-minute drive to work.

We are in a chapter of immense growth, building a vibrant city centre and reinvigorating our culture and spaces, and this is an exciting time to join a Council that is focused on the future of our people and our city.

Reporting to the Team Leader - Finance and working closely with the Manager - Financial Services and other members of the Financial Services Department, your strong financial accounting background, positive attitude and confidence means you will enhance the financial services team and be a valued business advisor for the varied aspects of our organisation.

The key focus for this role is the delivery of the consolidated Annual Report while maintaining best practice skills and process, and undertaking the key liaison with external auditors to ensure an efficient audit process.

The other responsibilities for the role include :

  • preparation of GST, FBT, petroleum and income tax returns,
  • preparation or review of key control reconciliations,
  • preparing the consolidated group financial statements for the Council group
  • application of public benefit entity accounting and reporting standards to council and group transactions,
  • continuously improving process and procedures to drive efficiencies

To be successful in this role you will :

  • be CA qualified (or equivalent) with relevant experience in a similar role.
  • demonstrate a positive hands on approach to your work and have ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • have good attention to detail
  • have good communicate skills and the ability to work with people from various areas.
  • be able to analyse data at a high level and communicate financial information in a language that non-accountants can understand

Being proficient in integrated accounting systems and having advanced spreadsheeting skills and prior excel modelling experience would certainly be an advantage.

At Invercargill City Council we pride ourselves on our values - positivity, respect, responsibility and above and beyond.

Finding the right fit for our team is really important to us and we work hard to provide an environment reflective of these values.

For more information please see the full job description or contact the Invercargill City Council on (03) 211 1777.

Applications close 2 March 2022

With the current border and quarantine restrictions in place, successful applicants must be legally entitled to live and work in New Zealand.

While all applications will be reviewed, first priority will be given to those applicants who are currently residing in New Zealand.
