Job Description

An exciting opportunity has come up with Wildland Consultants to join our nationwide team of dedicated and specialist ecologists, to be based in Invercargill, Southland. As part of this role, you will be collecting ecological information primarily from the best forest and wetland sites in a number of locations across the region, from Bluff to Northern Fiordland, on private and public land. Invercargill will be your base (although we are able to be flexible on this for the right candidates). You will be expected to work long days in the field at times.  The work will be a mixture of field and office based throughout the year with office reporting on fieldwork required regularly within an 8-week period. Experience working in the field and plant identification skills are a must for this role.

We have established a new team and base in Invercargill and are looking for another Field Ecologist (with good plant identification skills).  Training and support will be provided as required.  The intern role applies to those with less experience hoping to gain new skills and start their ecology career.  Mentoring and support will be provided to those in an Intern role.

Start date will be as soon as possible.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A qualification in ecology/botany, or equivalent experience.
  • Good knowledge and experience of New Zealand vegetation and identification skills.
  • Able to demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise health and safety and make good decisions in the field.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Be prepared to work remotely and on own.
  • Full current New Zealand driving licence.

DESRIABLE SKILLS AND EXPERENCE:

  • Current Outdoor First Aid certificate.
  • Training and experience with 4WD.
  • Good knowledge and experience of any specialist areas of ecology may be an advantage.
  • Ability to identify birds or other indigenous fauna species an advantage.
  • Skills and experience working off track in the backcountry.
  • Ability to navigate with a GPS and compass.
  • Experience liaising with landowners.

The ideal applicant for the intern/field ecologist role will possess the skills and experience listed above, although there will be training and support provided.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to expand and develop your career with one of New Zealand’s leading ecological consultancy companies.  We pride ourselves on our great company culture, and offer competitive employment packages, along with long-term career development.  The role is permanent, and there are opportunities to negotiate relocation to another Wildlands office elsewhere in New Zealand after two to four years.  This is a permanent full-time position, but fixed term contracts or flexible hours (while still achieving field work goals) would be considered.

If you have a genuine passion and knowledge of NZ ecology, a strong technical background, and are eager to become a valued member of the Wildlands team, register your interest today.

What we can offer:

An opportunity for you to learn how to apply your ecological knowledge, in a learning and rewarding environment, with a supportive team.

We provide outstanding ecological services to sustain and improve our environments.

See our website www.wildlands.co.nz for further information on Wildland Consultants Ltd and how to apply for this position.

Applications Close: Sunday 13 February 5.00pm

Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa. Applicants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 for consideration.
