Job Description

Every week we move millions of products to our customers at record speeds. Brilliant customer experiences at this kind of pace, require fresh and appealing products to be available whenever and however our customers shop with us. And in this area of our business, we help to make sure that happens.

By engineering innovative, smart technology, we put the tools in our colleagues’ hands to power a global supply chain. Whether it’s wine from New Zealand or milk from the local dairy farm, our tech performs. We solve problems at scale. We process billions of records, predicting and planning to make our customers lives easier. We keep our warehouses and stores operating smoothly around the clock, because what’s important to our customers, is important to us.

As an Engineer (Scala), you’ll be part of one of our Engineering squads, applying architectural and engineering principles to define and deliver technology that will provide better experiences, improve efficiency and reduce business costs, helping us to lower prices. You’ll work closely with a team of highly skilled engineers to solve complex problems with sustainable and performant software. In a cross functional team, you’ll own the application lifecycle from inception all the way through to production, supporting business critical applications and services.

We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We’d also like you to be yourself – analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll have a customer centric mindset and a passion for finding creative ways to solve problems, contributing as a progressive member of the engineering community.

More about the role

  • You’ll work as part of a cross functional team, owning the application lifecycle from inception all the way through to production, supporting business critical applications and services
  • You’ll build services, libraries and tools by producing clean, maintainable and well-documented code
  • Design innovative solutions to complex problems, identifying and using the best tools and approaches appropriate to the problem and solution.
  • You’ll work closely with technical and non-technical colleagues to ensure the services we build meet the needs of our business
  • Monitor and support production services
  • Keep up with industry trends and new tools, technologies and development methods with a view to adopting best practices that are appropriate to our team
  • Share knowledge with the rest of the team and coach more junior members

More about you

  • You’ll have proven commercial experience in Scala and Functional Programming
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Microservices architecture, event sourcing and CQRS
  • Common libraries such as Akka, Cats, Cats Effect, FS2, Akka-HTTP, HTTP4s, Shapeless, Slick and Doobie
  • Patterns for building scalable, performance, distributed systems
  • Databases – we use PostgreSQL
  • Experience with containerisation and cloud deployment
  • Familiarity with asynchronous and synchronous integration patterns – Kafka
  • Automation testing for example ScalaTest and performance testing
  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Good communications, listening skills and a mentoring mindset
  • A team player who delivers software as part of a collaborative team

As well as lots of on-the-job training and endless opportunities, you’ll get:

  • Colleague discount across our multi-brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat
  • Holiday allowance
  • Bonus scheme
  • Pension plan
  • Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how, where and when they work, combining remote and collaborative working with a flexible approach to hours, giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.
