Job Description

We’re a multi-channel, multi-brand business serving millions of customers a day, with the UK’s largest loyalty scheme and an ever-evolving set of digital platforms. All of this equals over 1.2 billion transactions each year, presenting a volume, depth and complexity of data that few can match.

We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say we have the most exciting data set in the country. And from the insights gained, we build scalable, high-performance products using cutting-edge technology that give our customers an amazing shopping experience â€“ like our award-winning Smartshop app. In an inclusive, agile environment, you’ll have the space to be curious, to experiment, and to solve real-world challenges. And you’ll get to see your creations in the hands of millions of people across the UK.

As an Engineer (Full Stack Javascript), you’ll be part of one of our Engineering squads, interpreting and following architectural and engineering principles, operating frameworks, and new and improved tech applications and solutions. With your technical craft, curiosity and experimentation, you’ll use judgement to apply specific techniques to deliver focused outcomes that support our customers.

We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We’d also like you to be yourself – analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll constantly strive to improve the way things are done in your team, contributing as a progressive member of the engineering community.

More about the role

  • Sainsbury’s strategic acquisition of Nectar and Argos brands leverages customer experience through all products available across the Group. Our team has the mission to enhance Digital Marketing Campaigns. It includes Self-Service features and automations of Ads workflow, tuning those campaigns through Machine Learning across different Sainsbury’s Channels and external ones such as Google, Facebook, Sky, and others.

  • In order to accomplish that mission, we are looking for smart developers looking to learn new things, happy to be involved in a challenging project and a nice environment to collaborate and develop their career. We are looking to hire passionate Full Stack Engineers where you'll be supported by your Sainsbury’s Tech colleagues and community.

  • You'll develop tools and applications by producing clean, maintainable code and together with your Product Team own and support features produced throughout the entire lifecycle. You participate in team ceremonies, collaborate with Sainsbury’s Tech teams and third-party vendors, and suggest potential areas for improvement to achieve business outcomes.

    More about you

  • Commercial experience building client-side web applications using React. Proficient in JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3 and SASS and using Redux and middleware such as Redux Saga and Thunk. Knowledge of React Hooks is a plus.
  • Passionate about JavaScript and Typescript, and experience with Node JS building GraphQL and REST APIs, or event driven integrations.
  • Experience with AWS Lambda + Serverless, or similar technology (Azure Functions, Google Functions, etc.), or Containerisation with Docker, ECS, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with web frameworks such as Nest or Express, NoSQL Databases such as Mongo Atlas, CosmosDB, or Couchbase, and believer of infra-as-code with Terraform or Cloudformation.
  • You are part of a team providing technical knowledge and ideas and adopt them â€“ TDD, Software Patterns, Libraries (Webpack / Babel / ESLint / Prettier), etc.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.

As well as lots of on-the-job training and endless opportunities, you’ll get:

  • Colleague discount across our multi-brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat
  • Holiday allowance
  • Bonus scheme
  • Pension plan
  • Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how, where and when they work, combining remote and collaborative working with a flexible approach to hours, giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.
