The opportunity
We have a new opportunity for Data Scientist, temporary full time role upto 30th June 2024 within SCATS division. This role will work as a member of a discreet team of data scientists responsible for determining and acting on opportunities to improve the way that the Transport network is developed and managed and customer experience and journeys are continuously improved. Through the intelligent processing and modelling of vast amounts of data, you will develop actionable recommendations that will result in tangible improvements to the services provided by Transport for NSW.
Your role will include:
- Partner with colleagues to produce statistical analysis and algorithms that support predictive analytics to facilitate improved communication and decision making on the ‘big opportunities’ to ease network congestion, improve safety, and improve the customer journey experience.
- Apply data science techniques using cloud technologies and analytical applications to deliver insights and create new ways of segmenting and managing behaviour of our customers.
- Work with colleagues, other transport Divisions, contractors, and 3rd parties to identify new data sources that contribute to the delivery of actionable insights.

- Create features using data science techniques that can be used in reporting, modelling and other analytics applications, ensuring that they are production ready for implementation.
- Create processes for anomaly detection and apply state of the art data mining techniques to large datasets, including public data, to uncover customer sentiment, preferences and behaviours that can be used to inform nudge tactics for mode shift, demand management and utilisation of places.
- Create data assets that assist Transport for NSW in engaging with customers and industry with information that illustrates the benefits of changes to customer behaviour or planning decisions.
- Communicate and engage with stakeholders to collect requirements and communicate insights to improve understanding of factors impacting network performance.

About you
- Understanding of machine learning & artificial intelligence techniques.
- Expert level skills and experience using SQL to perform analysis and manipulate data efficiently and knowledge of relational databases and architecture.
- Exposure to data visualisation applications such as Tableau or AWS QuickSight.
- Experience with Big Data platforms and associated applications, including an understanding of NoSQL databases and knowledge and experience using Advanced Analytics applications (Python, R).
- Good applied statistics skills such as distributions, statistical testing and regression.
- Ability to undertake cross validation of models.
- Experience coordinating with other teams for planning, design, governance, engineering and release management of processes and to ensure timely and accurate delivery of data and analytics services.
- Knowledge and experience building algorithms and applications using advanced scripting and object oriented programming in Python, C# or JAVA.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is TfNSW Grade 8 ($120,423.00 - $134,872.00) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
