What’s the role about?

As an experienced Data Governance professional you will lead a team of Data Governance Managers and Data Stewards to ensure that we embed data into the culture of the John Lewis Partnership You will own the Partnership Data Governance Roadmap and be accountable for ensuring compliance and controls are in place and aligned to the Partnership Data, Insight and Analytics Strategy. You will use your subject matter expertise and experience to support leaders to understand the risks and issues related to data and ensure that our maturity rating continues to increase.

What you’ll be doing:

As the  Data Governance Lead this key role in our business you will

• Create an enterprise-wide data governance framework and roadmap with a focus on improvement of data quality (in conjunction with the Head of Data Management and Data Quality Product Owner) and the protection of sensitive data through changes to organisational behaviour, policies and standards, principles, governance metrics, processes and data tools. 

• Establish and govern the enterprise data governance implementation roadmap including strategic priorities for the development of information-based capabilities. 

• Ensure that data related business requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated, understood and considered as part of prioritisation and planning. 

• Define indicators of performance and quality metrics and ensure compliance with data related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities and adoption requirements. 

• Deliver key messages to senior leaders (including the Executive Team and Partnership Board), around data governance and what it means for the Partnership. Work with Information Assurance to ensure appropriate levels of training and communications are in place at all levels

• Provide your extensive subject matter expertise to senior leaders on data governance-related queries. 

• Look across all aspects of data governance with a focus on uplifting the maturity rating. Support Data Governance Partners to apply and review controls regularly. 

• Keep up to date with upcoming changes in regulation/litigation and ensure that Partnership is well placed to deal with new challenges and expectations.

• You will have both a compliance and a commercial mindset and will use these perspectives to ensure we meet our data ambitions whilst remaining compliant and ethically conscious.

What you’ll have:

Essential

• Extensive experience in Data Governance and  or Data Stewardship roles 

• Extensive understanding of (Data) Risk Management 

• Expert knowledge of data related legislations and standards

• Commercially aware and able to translate governance and strategy to enable business strategy 

• Experience working with data maturity models

• Experience embedding data governance in a large and complex environment

• Able to build and manage relationships at all levels combined with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

What else can you bring:

• Membership of Data Management groups/communities

• Data Management Qualification 

• GDPR Practitioner level or equivalent

• IT Security Qualifications 

• Experience in managing matrix teams

• Experience of Collibra Data Governance tool (or equivalent)

• Good knowledge of data technologies 

• Experience of working in a regulated environment
