About this role

BT is building a world class Data & AI function within it’s Global & Digital businesses as part of its strategy to put data and actionable insight at the heart of everything it does and deliver on its Digital Transformation Programme to enhance the experience of its customers.  This is key to delivering next generation products and key business processes across Sales & Marketing, Service Delivery and Service Assurance.  Looking ahead we want to harness data and exploit specifically AI/ML technologies; we want people in the company and our customers to self-serve, make our operations smarter and create ‘best in class’ data driven innovative products our customer will love. For example, predicting service impacting incidents before they occur using network telemetry data, identifying jeopardy in delivery plans based on historical events, or personalising upsell opportunities by harnessing a 360-degree view of the customer, up to leveraging IoT to support big initiatives such as ‘smart cities.

For the Data & AI function to be successful in driving and unlocking value through innovation and thought leadership via the use of Data & AI it needs strong partnerships with business stakeholders.  

Data driven automation and decision making has never been more important to BT, to ensure we can create the best personal experiences for all our customers across our outbound, inbound assisted and digital channels.

This role will take the lead in creating and running Global and Digital businesses foundational data capability. It will oversee our data architecture, the tooling and frameworks our engineers and data scientists work with to build and deploy capability, the way we source our data and join it together and it will oversee the quality and availability of that data too.

This role will also lead in the design, build and continual optimisation of the data products and solutions we create to deliver personalisation at scale; collaborating closely with the data science team and commercial stakeholders, to ensure they are high availability, accurate and large scale.

You'll have the following responsibilities

Build a world class data engineering team and capability.

Providing technical leadership, based on extensive experience designing and delivering large scale automated data solutions that employ big data technology, distributed compute, hybrid-cloud platforms, embedded machine learning / advanced analytical decision making. Integrate into broader solutions and leveraging the best available vendor technology.

Lead and manage the overall Data Engineering team – which currently includes data architecture, data engineering, sourcing, quality, governance and leadership of a number of cross functional special projects teams.

Direct a cross functional team to design, build and manage Consumer’s next generation data platform and data products on our cloud-based systems. Ensuring we have the right tooling and development frameworks and methodologies.

Drive the migration of Consumer’s data to GCP, across transactional data sources, data warehouses, data marts and data feeds. 

Build cross functional relationships to understand data needs and deliver, working in a multi-disciplinary agile team.

You'll have the following skills & experience

Strong strategic thinker with commercial acumen

Deep technical knowledge of complex (and simple) big data architectures, covering all aspects (operations, scalability, compliance, risk, security) of our requirements

Detailed knowledge of how to apply the concepts and principles of leading data and software engineering practices

Understand and can help teams apply a range of techniques for data profiling and data quality and understand data policies and protocols, frameworks and patterns.

Good understanding and experience applying data science techniques

Excellent oral and written communication skills for all levels of an organisation

Can prioritise and allocate resources and manage utilisation.

Stays up to date with technology trends and is recognized as a data SME and informs about issues/new developments that relate to the strategy

Strong leadership, with experience initiating and driving complex and impactful big data and software projects

Able to navigate large corporate organisations, adopting a consultative and collaborative approach

Able to influence senior technical and non technical stakeholders

Other skills beneficial for the role are:

2 years experience of database performance analysis and tuning, preferably using Oracle or GCP.

Experience working the big data and/or cloud computing technologies an advantage (preferably GCP).

Academic - Degree Level (preferably Computer Science)

Anticipate needs and be pro-active in progressing work and breaking down barriers and removing blockers to progress.

Communicate complex ideas effectively to stakeholders at all levels.

Knowledge and experience of using Agile.
