Job Description

Working with some of the most vulnerable and difficult people in New Zealand daily is a rewarding challenge.  It's the reality that our team at Auckland Prison (located in Albany) face every day when they come through the gates into our site.

It's a job that's not for everyone - you'll need to bring strong integrity, great communication skills and a lot of patience in order to support the men we manage, assisting them to make the right decisions and take the right actions at the right times.  Throughout your shift you'll need to make life changing decisions that balance safety and security with wellness and wellbeing.

It can be a real juggle; you need to bring your 'A-game' every day!

Our Correction Officers, both men and women, come from a diverse range of cultures and bring a wide range of employment skills, languages and life experiences with them.  We have monthly intakes for new Correction Officer employees and we're now recruiting for April, May and June 2022.

Our standards are high. You will undergo a comprehensive selection process that will assess you against our core requirements.  All candidates are required to complete a full disclosure criminal history check. Please note - the Criminal History Check is Exempt from The Clean Slate Act. In other words, the Clean Slate Act does not apply to this position. Please declare any and all offences (even those outside 7 years) in your application.

Upon gaining an offer of employment you will be required to complete an initial residential 11- week training course. Long-term there are many opportunities for promotion and professional development e.g. qualifications in Offender Management.  The starting salary is $54,793 and increases to $57,432 after you graduate from the initial training.

A career as a Corrections Officer is much more challenging, much more interesting and much more rewarding than you can imagine!

To be eligible to apply you must:

  • Hold a current and full non-conditional New Zealand driver licence (NB. If you hold an International Driver Licence you can still apply however you must convert this to a full NZ Driver Licence before an offer of employment can be made to you)
  • Already hold the legal right to work full-time in New Zealand (ideally for a minimum of no less than 24 months)
  • Have the ability to pass a pre-employment drug test, a full medical and a physical readiness assessment
  • Declare any convictions and/or conflicts of interest and have them approved by us in accordance with our Corrections delegations policy
  • Commit to working rostered shifts across a Monday-Sunday 24-hour rota

In line with our Strategy Hōkai Rangi, we are prioritising applications from people who have experience in a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika environment and/or a willingness to learn. Please ensure you highlight any relevant experience and/or language skills in your application.

COVID-19 vaccination requirements

All people working inside prisons are required to be fully vaccinated as part of the COVID-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021. People in prison are some of the most vulnerable to COVID-19 and due to the ease of transmission, extending the Vaccination Order supports the safety and wellbeing of our staff and people in prison.
