About this role

You will be a part of the Specialist Public Cloud Engineering team.  This team designs and runs public cloud service offerings specifically for BT application services NOT being deployed onto our strategic public cloud platforms (AWS and GCP). Today, the only ‘specialist’ cloud platform offered is Microsoft Azure. However, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) will also fall under the scope of this team. The role will be a part of the team spearheading the deployment of Azure (and OCI) services within BT. The team are responsible for development, deployment, and upkeep of the Cloud "landing zone(s)" - a set of standardized services, security controls and patterns for adoption. To achieve economies of scale and instil familiarity across all engineering teams, the specialist cloud team will build Cloud “product lines” to match (where appropriate) that of AWS and meet the features of Azure (and OCI) application tenants. The team are also consulted in the implementation supporting the adoption of Azure (and OCI) services in solutions supporting our customer facing units.  


You'll have the following responsibilities

• Responsible for maintaining and extending the 'landing zone' capabilities to support new business requirements and security considerations. Furthermore, standardising and packaging new Azure and OCI services into the BT catalogue of services

• Innovating and extending the cloud engineering teams engineering quality through code management, build and deployment pipelines, adopt CI/CD. 

• Driving outcomes through agile collaborative processes and being able to estimate and plan multi-sprint features and alignment to quarterly outcomes

• Accountable for delivering quality software   interactively

• Lead in identifying potential continuous improvements to individual and team practices while being conscious of costs and benefits; and taking ownership of implementing any changes based on improvements identified

• Provides mentoring support and assurance of work of other engineers in a matrix squad structure. 

• Manages stakeholder relationships – including end colleagues (through feature requirements capture, show and tells). Will also manage stakeholders in security, audit and compliance of cloud. 

• You will build, run and operate the services you implement and will at times be accountable for supporting any operational challenges or issues that arise 

• Assisting with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and radiating information for the cloud community to consume – driving home the improvements we are making to the self-service experience.

• Automating Az subscription/OCI Tenant vending and driving the landing zone to being API first

• Implementing security and best practice guardrails – responsive, detective, and preventative controls; you will be extending the noncompliance reporting into Azure Security Center, OCI Cloud Guard and Azure Sentinel

• Engineering security controls with automation using Terraform

• Responsible for building out and extending the Cloud Common Services – this includes containers & Machine Images and their integration to cloud native monitoring such as Azure Monitor, Azure Network Watcher, OCI Visualiser, OCI AppManager

• Implementing solutions that span hybrid cloud architectures – for example integrating cloud with Enterprise solutions such as asset management, VDI, Collaboration tools, incident ticketing systems and processes

• Be fully cost conscious and drive cost efficiency in everything we do, using Cloud FinOps skills

• Documenting and sharing experience on cloud adoption within the BT Technology engineering areas.

• Designing operational solutions (SRE) to minimise the impact to end users of the platform during failures. 

• Build bespoke on-ramp patterns when introducing new specialist features and workloads into service and able to design solutions that can auto-recover or self-heal.  

• Working closely with a variety of IT and Network teams across the business to deliver TSR compliant solutions onto a public cloud platform

• Work with the on-prem support teams to facilitate migration of legacy Oracle services (databases, data warehouses, OSB, WebLogic platforms) from BT’s datacentres to OCI.

• Working with designers and architects to shape the Cloud solutions in accordance with Microsoft, Oracle and BT’s practices.   

• Building cloud best practices and blog posts – regularly contributing to Workplaces channel and Platform Wiki

• Deliver Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

• Collaborating with Microsoft and Oracle on new feature requests and issues 

• Acting in an operational support role where incidents occur in the underlying cloud platform and you may form a part of a support rota. 

• Change agent - You support change initiatives locally, adapting quickly and delivering change effectively.

• Bold decision maker - You break down problems and make decisions using analysis, intuition and expertise.

• Collaborative partner - You develop great working relationships with stakeholders, sharing knowledge and collaborating. 

 

You'll have the following skills & experience

• Excellent communication skills, often being able to compromise but draw out risks and constraints associated with solutions but also communicate with a wide audience of stakeholders up to ‘B’ level 

• You will have a DevSecOps mindset, with security being job number one, and be familiar with SRE

• Be able to work independently, without supervision and collaborate with other BT teams and cloud vendors (Microsoft and Oracle)

• Be available to travel and work remotely when required.

• Have experience working as a part of a team using agile methodologies

• You will have extensive hands-on experience of 3+ years of Azure Infrastructure architecture (preferable) and/or OCI architecture

• Have experience in the build of Cloud based infrastructures through IaC (Infrastructure as Code) and be competent in Terraform

• You will be experienced in programming language(s) – PowerShell & Python (preferable) but others considered (Java, Ruby, Go). You may have used shell-based scripting techniques in the past too.

• Strong understanding of Cloud Functions and their role in SRE

• You will have working knowledge of software engineering tools – Azure DevOps, Git, Gitlab

• Ability to write comprehensive designs and ensuring code has excellent documentation using Confluence and draw.io 

• Have had working hands on experience of Azure (preferable) and (optionally) Oracle products including – VPCs, AzExpressRoute/OCI Fastconnect, IPsec VPN Gateways, Azure vNets/OCI VCNs, TCP/IPv4 Subnets, Azure Active Directory, NSGs, Application Load Balancers, Windows/Linux VMs, Cloud/Blob Storage technologies, KMS, Az Traffic Manager, Az Firewall Manager, Az/OCI DevOps, Az/OCI Cloud Shell commands, Az CMB, Az Site Recovery, Az Advisor, Az Defender, Az/OCI Log Analytics. Az/OCI Bastion, OCI Cloud Guard

• Strong understanding of Microsoft technologies such as Active Directory, Windows Server, Powershell, Windows virtual desktops, Citrix

• Strong understanding of the Opinionated Cloud Landing Zone model

• Previous experience of building and deploying architectures into BT’s data centres and familiar with deployment and rollback solutions 

• Experience with network security, monitoring, and Identity, and Access Management (IdAM)

You should also hold or be preparing for an Azure (preferable) or OCI certification – ideally a solutions architect associate or a specialism (e.g. Security, VDI or Network). 


It would be desirable but not essential to have

• Experience with container technologies – Kubernetes and any public cloud flavour

• Experience with other public cloud providers – AWS and GCP would be advantageous

• Experience with serverless architectures in the cloud

• Good knowledge of Oracle IaaS technologies and products such as Oracle Linux, Oracle RDBMS, Oracle Service Bus, Oracle Data Integration, Oracle Clusterware, Oracle Dataguard & STREAMS, Goldengate, CNE, WebLogic Server/Cluster, Exadata

- Experience in working in agile projects

- Awareness of Cloud technologies including the benefits to BT as a business

- Worked with Cloud technologies and a strong infrastructure as code mindset

- Implemented solutions within a secure framework

- A broad experience of using your skills in a series of projects over the last 3 years

- Being an excellent communicator and able to manage stake holders

- Excellent communication and mentoring skills

- Demonstrate the ability to quickly make decisions and deliver technical proposals to a wider team, demonstrate gaining buy in to your proposals and to adapt proposals based on feedback from your peers
