About this role

The civils organisation will provide Openreach business units with civil engineering capability across Northern Ireland. This primarily involves Openreach activity relating to excavation and reinstatement in the public and private land, and could extend to elements of cabling, jointing and simple copper repair (e.g. on maintenance digs) 

The role involves small civil engineering work in the highway and customer property including excavation, backfill, hot/cold-lay reinstatement, along with rod rope and cabling activities, and traffic management set-up.

As the gang lead of a one or two-person team, you’ll be the person in charge on site when undertaking all excavation, backfill, and reinstatement work.  The role includes the safe and quality closure of any operational site in line with method statements, legislation and including the disposal and transfer of any surplus waste materials to designated locations.

• Duct provision in Footway & Soft

• Blockage Clearance in Footway/Soft  

• Maintenance & Provision Digs

• Armoured Cable provision

• Dig & Fix capability in copper network up to 20 pair cable

• Dig & Install capability on Fibre to the premises

• Hotbox / Hotlay Reinstatement capability

• Blockage Clearance in Carriageway / Hard Tarmac/concrete footway and carriage way

• D.I.G capability using Gabacom Micro Ducting

• Frame & Cover Replacement

• Cold Lay / Hot lay Reinstatement

• Non-mechanised rodding/roping/cabling 

• Percussion mole capability

• New excavation techniques that may be trialled and enabled

You'll have the following skills & experience

• Experience of excavation, installation, repair, reinstatement, and support services work

• Safety of yourself for commissioning, planning, managing and carrying out work on or near underground services excavation work in line with HSE HSG47 (Third edition 2014) and subsequent updated HSE editions.

• Correct use of PPE including face masks

• Full Driving License B+E type licence minimum.

• Numeracy and literacy skills, comfortable using smart devices and ready to learn as new tools emerge

• Normal Colour Vision

• Physically able to excavate, and assist in safely moving plant/kit
