At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors (European Pressurised Water Reactor-EPR), the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.
Marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of our nuclear power industry, HPC will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions.
Working for the Nuclear Island Design Management Team within HPC Engineering Directorate, you will ensure that HPC Design Entities deliver to quality, cost and schedule, a coherent, safe and compliant design fit for procurement, construction, commissioning and operation.
The role is responsible for project management of the design and engineering for the N3 Area (HD, HNX, HQ, HXA and HVL buildings) and the Commissioning Programme.
The Role
The Area Engineering Manager reports to and is accountable to the Head of NI-DMT.
The Area Engineering Managers sit within the Design Management Teams to provide each Senior Area Project Manager with a single point of contact responsible for managing the delivery of design for their area.
In addition to this the area engineering managers maintain engineering dedicated support with the programmes. The N3 Area engineering manager is responsible:
- for managing the delivery of design for the Commissioning Programme,
- to lead the Responsible Design (RD) sequence 6 delivery (commissioning procedures and operating procedures) with the support of Macro-Activity leads per domains.
The key responsibilities are:
• Supervise the quality of activities related to the N3 scope of responsibility;
• Support the Senior Area Project Manager leading the MDAT within the Delivery Directorate with reliable technical views and judgements to allow Best for Project decisions, to be made in their area;
• Ensure networks and connections are built between the decision makers in Area Management and the relevant people in Engineering and the TCO;
• Drive convergence of technical issues between Programmes, Engineering and TCO using decision making committees as necessary;
• Monitor Engineering Design Open Points pre hand-over to site, escalate those with potential to impact the Area AWS via the MDAT and engage with Open Point owner to ensure resolution in line with Area priorities;
• Support JDO and the area on the Open Points post hand-over management
• Review Design Changes (and change in the Reference Configuration), escalate those with potential to impact the Area AWS. Prepare engineering and technical input into any Best for Project (BfP) decisions that are needed to be made by the SAPMs.
• Support configuration management strategy and processes on engineering activities related to his area and contracts
• Ensure there is a strong link between the Engineering and Area schedule (AWS). Escalate any risks, changes and delays with potential impacts on the Area AWS via the MDAT.
• Be involved in resolution of any Technical issues and work with Senior Area Technical Lead and stakeholders in the TCO to ensure strategies and approaches can be managed within the risk of not meeting the Safety Case requirements.
• Provide input to Engineering, Programme and Project ROTC’s to manage scope gaps and scope adjustments, engage and converge with the Programmes and support though all ROTC’s.
• Deal with Early Warnings from RD and actively work in Risk Reduction workshops to mitigate technical/schedule/commercial issues.
• Support Engineering directorate in management of the contract leading the sequence 6 (commissioning and operating procedures), including management and challenge of new request, assessment of compensability and quotations, supporting RD on mitigation of risk.
• Provide engineering support to the Commissioning programme, mainly supporting interfaces between this programme and the RD.
• Lead, motivate and develop a small team of Engineering Leads; setting objectives, managing performance and ensuring that staff has the necessary skills to deliver area/programme objectives.
• Knowledge of design process and design activities related to Nuclear Industry
• Good project management and organisational skills
• Understanding of quality requirements
• Budget and commercial awareness
• Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including CDM and Nuclear Site License requirements
• Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Knowledge of power station design (EPR or NPP)
• Ability to travel regularly between the various project Command Centres and engineering entities
Qualifications & Experience
• Degree in a relevant science or engineering subject.
• Experience within the Nuclear Industry
