We help customers protect what matters most

Scottish Widows is one of the largest insurance brands in the UK, with a truly distinguished heritage. We help our seven million customers cover what they care about most through our life insurance, pensions and investment propositions. This is where our actuaries do their best work: they analyse financial complexity and apply their professional judgment to ensure that we can provide the right products and services for our customers.

Our culture provides opportunity for colleagues

Our vision of being the best bank for customers is dependent on every colleague committing to and demonstrating our core value of "putting customers first". Our actuarial graduates contribute towards the Group achieving our vision through your day-today actions being performed in line with our Codes of Responsibility and Group Policies. By individually and collectively committing to our Group values and codes, we can make a difference together and help Britain prosper.

We're also committed to employing a diverse and inclusive workforce, reflective of the customers and communities we serve – where all our colleagues can be themselves and succeed on merit.

We're proud to have received the following industry recognition: 'Stonewall Top Private Sector Employer', 'Top10 Employer for Working Families', 'The Times Top 50 Employer for Women' and both 'Gold Standard' and "Best Workplace Adjustments Process" from the Business Disability Forum – each demonstrating our dedication to the principles of agile working and inclusion for all.

Individuals with disabilities will receive reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform crucial job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.

Is becoming an actuary for you?

As you might expect our actuarial team members are highly numeric and strategic, and have strong analytical skills. They’re also deeply inquisitive who are passionate about what our customers really need. They can spot the big issues in the finer details and can expertly explain complexity in a simple way!

This makes them phenomenal collaborators and trusted advisors. If this excites you then joining us as an actuarial trainee will help you develop your craft, and will also support you as you achieve your professional actuarial qualification.

  • Become well-versed in explaining complex number-sets through clear and concise stories, sometimes using data visualisation tools.

Our actuarial students receive an outstanding study package that covers the cost of materials and exam fees, plus a generous study day allowance.

Best of all, our graduates work in collaborative teams that provide exciting careers as well as the understanding and support needed for the IFoA exams!

The work you could be doing

  • Helping to develop or price insurance products for individual customers
  • Sophisticated modelling and providing analysis & insight to the business.
  • Exploring opportunities to develop our asset strategy
  • Contributing to and writing reports that support the work of senior directors
