Job Description

The Director, Merchandise Accounting and Controls, is responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the Balance Sheet and P&L activities related to Merchandising, including Inventory, Sales, Cost of Goods Sold, Gross Profit, transportation cost, Import cost/process, good for resale vendor payment and collections. The Director partners with Commercial Finance, Enterprise Business Services (EBS) , Global Controllership office, Supply Chain, the Merchants and our vendors to provide accounting leadership and direction and ensure an efficient and effective control environment is maintained in accordance with company policies and US GAAP. This position will recruit, train and inspire a team of managers and by extension EBS associates.

1. Lead and oversee procedures for all Gross Profit and Imports accounting in both the retail method (stores) and cost method (logistics, import and e-com).This includesbut to limited to transportation accounting, DC operations, and Imports accounting. Establish in depth knowledge of the Retail Inventory Method (RIM) and Imports accounting and lead and develop team capabilities to understand both technical accounting and system requirements to ensure accurate recording of our gross profit, Inventory valuation and hedge accounting.
2. Motivate, lead and develop associates through performance management coaching, goal setting and career development – direct team of 2 and the extended EBS team.Continuously assess and monitor talent development by identifying succession plans, challenging learning opportunities to foster professional growth and managing EBS performance through positive feedback and escalations when necessary.Play a leadership role in the greater Finance team ensuring cross functional knowledge and training is developed through the team.
3. Drive associate engagement by valuing associates, listening and responding to concerns, recognizing and rewarding accomplishments and providing opportunities for growth and development.
4. Develop the roadmap for Merchandise accounting including root cause analysis of system restriction, highlighting and presenting system improvements needed, especially in the Imports area. Leading end to end process documentation of financial inventory flow, including Import foreign exchange and hedge accounting, purchase from 3rd parties, inter-company transactions. Provide thought leadership and guidance to the business (primarily Merchant team) to help them understand the complexities of RIM Accounting and the system processes
5. Lead financial analysis and consultation on ad hoc projects, highlighting risks, opportunities and financial reporting requirements for new business initiatives.Partner with business customers to ensure accounting for ongoing business initiatives are in compliance with US GAAP standards and provide financial analysis to support the business.
6. Assess, and approve recommendations for improvements in the control environment for transactional processing and financial reporting by partnering with direct reports, business functional areas and EBS to optimize the integrity and value of accounting systems information.
7. Partner with business areas and stakeholders to enhance current processes and implement new projects while communicating accounting policies and company procedures to ensure internal controls are in place, removing and highlighting potential system roadblocks and the accounting implications of the initiatives.
8. Lead the compliance requirements and reporting for vendor allowance policy including reporting to senior executives. Highlighting deviations from policy and methods to drive continuous improvement and accountability within the process. Lead assessment of revenue recognition as it relates to the sale of product, i.e. Gross vs Net assessment, critical to the accurate recording of the company’s sales results.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience

  • Background in Canadian and US GAAP technical accounting knowledge

  • Strong interpersonal & presentation skills

  • Result oriented and critical thinking – high sense of ownership

  • Strong organization skills, able to meet conflicting deadlines

  • Proficient to advance level: SAP, Essbase, PowerPoint

  • Broad interest and/or experience in the retail industry
