Whetu Marewa | Rising Star

The Whetu Marewa (Rising Star) services aims to build the confidence, resilience & wellbeing of taiohi (young people) with mental health and addiction related issues by enabling access to a range of supported interventions. Whetu Marewa provides mobile support in a community out-reach approach by offering a Clinician-led school and community-based clinics. 

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

There are two roles available, one is based in Tauranga, and the second can be based in Thames or Waihi- delivering to the Hauraki region. You will be working 40 hours per week – Monday to Friday – 8.30am- 5.00pm.

The role of the youth worker involves supporting taiohi (12-24 years) with mild and moderate mental health and addiction concerns and social stressors.  Support to taiohi will include brief intervention and positive youth development model of care such as; 

  • Youth coaching and mentoring
  • Kaupapa Māori cultural interventions including a focus on positive cultural identity, whakapapa and whaanauora, kapa haka, waiata and other
  • A range of recreational and cultural activities as a way of engaging taiohi as well as helping them to build skills and confidence, community connections and healthy, wellbeing focused lifestyle choices such as rock wall climbing, mountain bike riding, rock painting, mindfulness colouring, candle making, crafts, hiking, camping, and skiing.

Successful applicants will also have: 

  • The New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (NZCHW) or a recognised equivalent or be prepared to study towards this qualification or a recognised equivalent.
  • A current full driver’s licence.
  • An understanding of local community issues and of tikanga Māori.
  • The ability to work independently and innovatively to engage taiohi and whānau.
  • Great communication and listening skills with the ability to empathise.
  • An inspiring and enthusiastic outlook on life.  

The Covid-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021 requires staff working in health-related services to be fully vaccinated (this includes any subsequent boosters). As a provider we are responsible for ensuring all of our employees are vaccinated and boosted as per the mandate and employees are responsible for ensuring we have access to this information
